I spent a few days in Boston recently. I always love visiting because the city is so vibrant - so many great colleges and students, lots of fun bars, a beautiful waterfront, old architecture, and the place is just dripping with history. This is the view of downtown Boston, from the top of the Prudential Center.

I took this picture of downtown Minneapolis last night from the Northeast side of the river. The view was unbelievable! Thank you very much to the individuals who helped make it happen! (I had to sign a waiver, in case I did something stupid like fall off the roof, which I was happy to sign for access to such an amazing view). If this view looks at all familiar, it might be because I was standing right next to the permanent camera that KARE 11 news uses to show live shots of Minneapolis (it was also used for some still footage during Monday Night Football for the Vikings).

Get a Grip

My friend Sarah asked me to do a bit of a concept piece with her about relationships in her life. So we set out on the town with a beaten up blue guitar and an idea. After we shot at the train tracks, we ended up over in St Paul and found this great alley...

She describes the concept like this: "Since I couldn't find a Clark Gable, I decided that the guitar would work quite well for me as a symbol representing men. My men. The men I keep falling for, clinging to, playing, and being played-by. They are always artists at the core, and an inevitable danger for me. The guitar becomes the guys that I have lusted after, leaned on, loved and let go. As I found myself in a substantial time of transition, I had the notion to liberate the guitar/love through some non-traditional therapy: a photo shoot. This is my new bravery - letting it be captured, looking at it and then sharing it."

Strobist: SB800 with shoot through umbrella, reduced shutter speed to darken the background.

Erik is a local graphic designer who's helping me with my logo. I met up this past Sunday with him and his family to take some portraits at Como Park (which I've never done before, and it's definitely a great place for that!)

I must be getting really hard on myself, because I came home and noticed my autofocus was just the slightest bit off, and set about figuring out how to manually calibrate it. Rock solid now, I can focus on ant on a leaf floating on a river now and it'll be tack sharp.

The Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis is our version of the Empire State Building (actually, the Empire State building is the only concrete skyscraper taller than this one). It was completely redone last year to make it into a "W" Hotel. Wilbur Foshay, the man who built the Tower back in 1929 right before the Great Crash hired the famous John Philips Sousa to write a special song as part of a massive dedication party. 6 weeks after the dedication ceremony Foshay went broke, the check bounced, and Sousa forbid the song from being played again (until the debt was repaid 60 years later). Now, it's a very trendy new hotel with a couple of great bars (Prohibition up top plays 20's era music continuously, sort of an interesting little theme).

I got together with some of my friends from the Minneapolis Photo Coop for a shoot today. The setup at the MPC is incredible, I'd definitely recommend it if you're a local photographer.

Annette's friend Laura came out. It was her first time modeling, and she did a great job. There's almost no retouching here (just some adjustments in Lightoom).

Technique: some contribution from a hair light here (gridded AB800), keylight was an AB large softbox on an AB800.

This is the North facing view from the top of the Foshay Tower in downtown Minneapolis. When I came down from the observation deck, I got chatting with the guys at the front desk. My backpack spurred a conversation around a local guy (aka "Super Dave") who did a base jump from this observation deck recently (see the video). Apparently the guy got away clean, and then came back to brag and landed in jail.

Technique: Straight shot with some minor adjustments in Lightroom (not HDR).

Lately I've had some late nights at work, and it just happens that the sun has been setting about the time I'm on my way home, so I've set out to capture a bunch of quick sunset shots around the city. This is a look down 11 St S with St Thomas (it seems all the lawyers I know went there) in the foreground and Target Plaza South looming in the background. TPS is unmistakeable at night, the top of the building is a constantly changing rainbow of colors.

You're Curious Now Aren't You

My friend Sarah asked me to do a bit of a concept piece with her about relationships in her life. So we set out on the town with a beaten up blue guitar and an idea...
