"Oh my god, I'm a monster and my face is slowly melting off! Not only this, but someone has stuck a really weird christmas tree on my head!"

If The Sagrada Família was able to communicate with us, this is what it would be screaming. From the outside, one side of it looks incredibly strange and freaky! The inside is the polar opposite.
Probably the most famous church in Barcelona, La Sagrada Família is one of Gaudí's most infamous works. He started work on it in 1883 and it's still not completed to this day.

The queues for this place are huge, but thankfully our flat overlooked here, so we could see as soon as people started gather and run down to get near the front. Once we walked through the door, I was really taken aback! I did not expect this inside based on what I saw outside!

The whole architecture of the interior is really hard to put into words, so I'll simply leave you with this photo of part of the ceiling and some pillars. Enjoy!

Barcelona's Gothic Cathedral

Everyone was aghast when I said I hadn't been to Barcelona, so I went to Barcelona. The aforementioned everyone also said I'd love the architecture. I loved the architecture.

When you mention Barcelona and architecture, you automatically think of Antoni Gaudí and with good cause, although this is not the only amazing architecture in this beautiful city...
When wandering down Las Ramblas and the surrounding area, we came across Barcelona Cathedral. It looks okay from the outside, but we decided to go in and loved the ornate gothic styled interior.

To get this shot, I had my tripod low and was crouched over it. I think I got away with this, as people thought I was praying! Sadly, I didn't escape the tripod police for long. While in another spot taking a long exposure, a guard came up to me and said something in Spanish.

I knew immediately that he was saying no tripods, but I was in the middle of my final exposure, so in very, very slow English, I said I didn't understand him and could he repeat that. He then repeated in English and said I wasn't allowed to use a tripod in the cathedral.

With all the speed of someone who has just had a stroke, I said that I would take my tripod down immediately and then I slowly shuffled towards my camera bag. By the time all this happened, I my photo was done and I could then actually pack away my gear. The guard wandered off, which was Greg's queue to sneak his tripod out and get some shots.

We figured seeing the guy chased me off, he wouldn't be back anytime soon.

In Awe of Art

If you've followed my photographer for any length of time then you may have noticed something. I generally don't have people in my photos. Not if I can help it.

Saying that, I find that some of my best photos have a lone person in them. A couple can be nice, but I find to my eye, one is the magic number.
This shot was taken during a weekend visit to Paris with my friend Anna. She had gone off to sit in the park, probably bored of me waiting around waiting on the right light or angle. I wanted to see the Mona Lisa (unimpressive), but I was short of time, so I was power walking around France's most famous art museum.

I skidded to a halt (well, slowed down a little, I wasn't going that fast) when I saw this woman staring up at these massive framed paintings. I finally got around to processing it and, although it's not my usual type of photography, I quite like to branch out and try different styles. We shouldn't aim to pigeon-hole ourselves.

The Balcony

This is by far one of the best interiors I've found in my travels around the world. I've taken quite a few of this building, but I liked the framing of this one.

If you're still wondering what and where it is, it's the Opéra Garnier in Paris, France. It was in fact the setting of The Phantom of the Opera.

This was actually taken more than a year ago and I can't remember a lot of the circumstances. My friend Anna assures me that I was standing here for a good long while waiting for a family to move out of the way, followed by another photographer who was getting shots over the balcony.

He should have seen the bigger picture and gone for the framing with the pillars!

People often wonder how I get my shots so free of people. Usually I have a tripod and blur them out using a long exposure. Sadly I couldn't use my tripod here, so I've used a tiny bit of Photoshop magic.

The Finest Dining Hall in Europe

For those of you that follow my photos, you may recognise this as a close-up shot of one of my previous locations, The Painted Hall in Maritime Greenwich.

Even on a quiet day, this room can still get pretty busy. The most annoying aspect is that any tour groups of the Old Royal Naval College stop right in the middle of this room for about ten minutes at a time. Thus, trying to get this shot took about 45 mins wait.

During my stay in this room, there were some assistants from a film company stopping people going to certain parts of The Painted Hall, as they were shooting a major movie outside the building and didn't want any distractions at the windows. Thankfully, after a while, I manage to persuade them to move out of my way after they stopped people entering the hall. For those interested, it was a version of Les Misérables staring Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Helena Bonham Carter. Quite the cast!

This has reputedly been called the finest dining hall in Europe and hopefully you can get some idea of it's grandeur from this photography. Can you imagine eating your chicken kiev and chips in here? Nah, neither can I.

I have done many interior shots from around the world, such as Zagreb Cathedral in Croatia and Opera Garnier in Paris, but it's been a while since I went out in London for some.

Although a very common shot from this location, I wanted my own take on it and it finally took magnificent shot by John Esslinger to get my ass in gear and make the trek to Greenwich. And what a trek it was.

I live in North West London and Greenwich is in South East London. Normally when the Jubilee line is runing, it takes me about an hour. Sadly, during my trip, this line had a signal failure and it took me over two and a half hours to make the journey. Luckily I was aiming for interior shots, as it was pouring down with rain.

Once I had arrived, the whole area was filled with tents and vans and generators. It turns out that they were filming a movie version of Les Misérables there, staring Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and Helena Bonham Carter. The Painted Hall was in line with the current shoot, so the production company had staff in the room stopping people from crossing the hall every now and again during takes. I managed to persuade them to stop people behind me, so I had a completely clear room for a few minutes. Bonus!

The room has a couple of shiny, wheeled tables in it, so that you may view the decorated ceiling without straining your neck. I used it to get the reflection of the more ornate section of the room. It required a little wheeling around the room, but I got there in the end.

Flickr never, ever does interior shots justice, even in the lightbox, so take a minute and please view this over on SmugMug; it's a much more pleasing experience to the eye.

While on a photowalk around Westminster with Siany, we walk around the back of Westminster Abbey and she found this little entrance. We wandered in and found this fantastic little cloister and many other churchy-type things. We also found the oldest door in England, dating back to around 1050.

The interior of this, I believe it's called a chapter house, is modelled on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. I loved the sense of perspective that this corridor gave, plus the wonderful ceiling and the bright sunlight shining in through the cloister windows.

This looks much more lovely large on black. I've also just realised that my Flickr stream has just passed over a million views, so thank you everyone who as visited and continues to visit my photos!

The Secret Door

Every trip I go on, I try and get some good architectural interior shots, sometimes with people, sometimes without, but usually in some sort of religious building (even though I'm a devout athiest…) Still, you can't beat a good landscape most of the time.

Uspenski Cathedral (Uspenskin katedraali / Успенский собор) is one of the few big landmarks that Helsinki has and is an Eastern Orthodox church built in a typical Russian style. When we arrived here, the inside was almost pitch black, but we asked the man in charge and he allowed us to use tripods.

Luckily near the end of our shoot, all the lights came on and there was a brilliant blue hour appearing through the windows. As you might have guessed from the title, there is a secret door in this cathedral, so see if you can find it. (Viewing it large will help).

Red, Green and Blue

Although churches have great interiors, you don't always have to look towards religious buildings for great interior architecture; you can find some great examples in other places, such as shopping centres or opera houses. This one is, in fact, a library and quite a stunning one I think you'll agree.

I had done my research on Helsinki and this was one of the places I wanted to visit. My friends thought I was a bit strange for wanting to see a library and when we went out to dinner with some Finns, they had no idea which library I was talking about. After some more research and exploring, we finally found it.

This is the most ornate room found in the National Library of Finland (Kansalliskirjasto / Nationalbibliotek), part of the University of Helsinki and the foremost research library in the country. It is just next to Senaatintori square and the Lutheran Cathedral. The library contains one of the most comprehensive collections of books published in the Russian Empire of any library in the world and is well worth a (free) visit if you're in the area. They allow photography, but not tripods.

Due to the colours and details, it looks much better large on black.

The Praying Woman

Ljubljana is a very small city and, much like Zagreb, doesn't take long to explore. Also like Zagreb it is full of churches. And like in Croatia, in Slovenia they don't mind you taking photographs, even with a tripod. They frown on flash photography, but as I don't have a flash, that doesn't bother me.

I was wandering around inside the Cathedral of St. Nicholas trying to find some good compositions when I spotted this woman sitting alone at the back. I cranked up the ISO slightly and got a few shots of her solemnly sitting there. I quite like the simplicity of a lone figure sitting there juxtaposed against such an ornate surrounding.

This really does need to be seen larger, as it takes on a completely different feel.

I forgot to say, my photostream passed 500,000 views the other day, so thank you so much! That's 250,000 views in two months.

Zagreb Cathedral

The first stop on my north Balkan trip was Zagreb. It's a very beautiful city, full of gorgeous women, but unfortunately there's not much to do. I wandered around most of the town in a couple of hours, including going up and down hills. It doesn't really seem to be a tourist city, or a party city.

Some places look great from the outside, but sadly Zagreb's most famous landmark, the cathedral, was covered in scaffolding. I assume for some sort of renovation work. Luckily, most religious buildings, whether in Paris, Budapest or at home in London have fantastic interiors. Zagreb Cathedral was no exception.

I was amazed as soon as I walked in. I sneakily brought out my camera and took a few shots. No-one seemed to mind. I then got out my tripod and reeled off a few more exposures. A nun walked past me, smiled, and carried on. It turns out that 90% of the churches in this part of the world allow non-flash photography inside with no problem whatsoever. Such a change from most countries I've visited.

During my shoot, an elderly Croat woman walked by, smiled and said something to me. Upon telling her I didn't understand, she laughed and walked off. Later on, she returned and spoke to me once more. I repeated that I didn't understand Croatian. Regardless, she spent the next 20 minutes telling me a story. It was very entertaining. She had different voices for different parts or characters in the tale. When she laughed, I laughed and when her tone became sombre, I put on my serious face. I took from her body language and sound effects that part of the story was about something falling over. This could mean that she was giving me information about the cathedral, as it partly collapsed during an earthquake in 1880.

I'd definitely visit Croatia again, but next time will be around the coast to places like Split, Dubrovnik and Hvar. I maybe even add it on to a Bosnia trip.

Sainte-Chapelle

I love interior photography and you can always find something good in each city, whether it is Napoli, London or Budapest. I knew that the architecture in Paris was going to be good, but I was overwhelmed.

This is the Sainte-Chapelle and is possibly my second favourite interior in Paris, after La Conciergerie. It's name means, Holy Chapel and is the only remaining Capetian royal palace on the Île de la Cité. It was commissioned by King Louis IX of France in the 13th century is made up of over 100 million* pieces of stained glass.

* Possibly made up by me and completely untrue.

It is very busy, but this at least masked my work with the tripod. I had tried this shot a few times. The first time, I was nearing the end of my third exposure when an old man walked up and stood in front of my camera to take a photo of the wall behind me. An entire row of people sitting down next to me groaned when he did this! He eventually noticed me, apologised and moved out of the way. I still had to take the shots again. Luckily I didn't get caught, although the sheer number of people was annoying.

I had processed this photos a few weeks ago, decided I'd post it this week and then lo and behold, a few days before I do, a one Mr Trey Ratcliff posts almost exactly the same shot, but much better! HDR images got me into photography back in January and the work of two people inspired me; The aforementioned Trey Ratcliff and my friend Greg Annandale.

This shot is an absolute must-see large (press L), so please do that.

You've got to love a good staircase and the Paris Opera House has plenty of those! Sadly you're not allowed to use a tripod, but we all know that just means you can use a tripod as long as no-one notices you. I'm a big fan of mixing interiors and exteriors when I visit a city. Interiors are great for during the day or if the weather is pretty bad. That can be my travel photography tip of the day.

Designed by Charles Garnier, Palais Garnier was the primary home of the Paris Opera from 1875 until 1989. Upon its inauguration during 1875, the opera house was named officially the Académie Nationale de Musique - Théâtre de l'Opéra. It retained this title until 1978 when it was re-named the Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris.

After the opera company chose the Opéra Bastille as their principal theatre upon its completion during 1989, the theatre was re-named as the Palais Garnier, though Académie Nationale de Musique is still sprawled above the columns of its front façade. In spite of the change of names and the Opera company's relocation to the Opéra Bastille, the Palais Garnier is still known by many people as the Paris Opéra, as have all of the several theatres which have served as the principal venues of the Parisian Opera and Ballet since its initiation.

This building is the inspiration and setting for the novel, The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra).

Gothic Opera

On my second day in Paris I had a lot to see and do. After heading down to see La Conciergerie, I decided to head up to the Opera House in Paris, Palais Garnier. This looks quite impressive from the outside, but the inside is quite magnificent. Sadly you're not allowed to use tripods and it's very dark in parts of it. Luckily I rarely pay attention to 'no tripod' rules.

Sometimes when I process interiors I try and show how they looked at the time, although this one looked quite spooky, so I went down the gothic route. After spending time looking around this building, I headed back to the louvre to see the Mona Lisa. It's surprisingly small!

La Conciergerie

Upon arriving in Paris, I knew of the famous landmarks I wanted to photograph; The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Arc de Triomphe, etc. I also wanted to get many more things, but didn't know where to start. Luckily our hotel had some pamphlets in the lobby. One of these was called, "The Seven Monuments of Paris." I started flicking through this and as soon as I saw the Conciergerie, I knew I had to go and get a photo of this interior. Right up my street.

We walked along the Seine for a bit, onto the Île de la Cité near Notre Dame and found the Palais de Justice. Part of this is the Conciergerie. There was no queue and not many people around, which greatly surprises me. I set up my tripod in the corner and got a few shots of this magnificent medieval hall.

This was a royal palace and prison and during the French Revolution was often the place prisoners were taken from to face the guillotine. It in fact became know as the, "antechamber to the guillotine" during the Reign of Terror. Undoubtably the most famous prisoner to be held here was Queen Marie Antoinette. This particular part is the Hall of The Guards.

If you're ever in Paris, I think you should pop along to see this place. To be honest, the rest of the building was of little interest to me, but this room alone made it worth it for me, especially from an architectural photographer point of view.

Leadenhall Market

I know I say this about 90% of photos, but this looks much better large, on black! Thanks!

Although not quite as impressive as it's Italian counterparts, Leadenhall Market is still quite a pretty structure. Situated next to the Lloyd's Building, the interior of this market is very colourful and ornate when you take the time to look at it.

This market has been around since the 14th century and mostly sells fresh food, generally meat, poultry, game and cheese. It also sells flowers I believe. According to sources, this stands on the centre of what was Roman London.

This shot was taken on a Sunday photowalk with Murphyz and John Esslinger; our first one together and hugely enjoyable!

This photo has a fair bit of detail, so it looks much better when viewed larger. (Press L)

Szent István-bazilika

I do love a good interior and church interiors are some of the best; they're just so full of detail! As much as I hate religion, they certainly know to produce great buildings! Saying that, you can also get some great interior shots in museums too!

This is St. Stephen's Basilica or Szent István-bazilika in Hungarian. It's one of the tallest buildings in Budapest (alongside the wonderful parliament building) and possibly the most ornate. You're allowed to take photos inside, although there isn't many good places to mount a GorillaPod. If you push past loads of people, you can happily attach your tripod to the top of the collection box. Not that I did this of course...

I wasn't going to put this photo up today, but it's Emyli's birthday today and she likes these type of shots, so this is dedicated to her. Happy birthday!

Galleria Umberto I

I like photographing interiors a lot and I'd seen photos of this galleria before, so it was on my list of things to see in Napoli. Unfortunately I had no idea where it was. I arrived at the airport, and the best (and pretty much only) way into town is by the Alibus (only three Euros). I sat on the bus for a while taking in the city, as I was going to the last stop, Piazza Municipio (Municiple Square, as I like to call it). I jumped off the bus here and directly opposite me was Galleria Umberto. Nice.

Naples has some great, great architecture, whether magnificent shopping centres like his, hidden underground worlds. from the Romans, or intricate, confusing back streets! After this, I headed off down to the seaside to get some more holiday snaps.

Bridge Over the River Bones

As I have already shown you, the Natural History Museum is a great place for photos. It has some amazing architecture and is always packed full of people if you want some candid shots. Strangely, as packed as it was, I looked up and saw only two men standing on this bridge. I think they serve to highlight how grand this building is. I did a black and white version as well and liked both, but I ended up going with the colour version; They both had totally different feels to them.

Some buildings lend themselves well to interior HDR shots, and the Natural History Museum is definitely one of them!

Piccadilly Arcade

As a keen photographer of London interiors and whatnot, I've often tried to capture this arcade and I've never been too happy with the results. This time I thought I'd try and give it a warm, traditional feel, and I'm much more pleased with how it's turned out. With my architectural shots, I often go for grandeur or detail, but I like the tones of this photo.

Piccadilly Arcade was opened in 1909 and was designed by Thrale Jell.
