Red Fox: Ambling along ...

From inside our log home, I caught sight of this beautiful, hunting fox on the opposite side of the slough (wetlands). It was great to watch him emerge from the cattails and slowly walk across the frozen, snow-covered slough and then wend his way back to his den in the poplar forest.

.
The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the largest of the true foxes, as well as being the most geographically spread member of the Carnivora [...].

The winter fur is dense, soft, silky and relatively long. [...]. There are three colour morphs; red, silver/black and cross (see Mutations).[53] In the typical red morph, their coats are generally bright reddish-rusty with yellowish tints. A stripe of weak, diffuse patterns of many brown-reddish-chestnut hairs occurs along the spine. Two additional stripes pass down the shoulder blades which, together with the spinal stripe, form a cross. The lower back is often a mottled silvery colour. The flanks are lighter coloured than the back, while the chin, lower lips, throat and front of the chest are white. The remaining lower surface of the body is dark, brown or reddish.[52] During lactation, the belly fur of vixens may turn brick red.[54] The upper parts of the limbs are rusty-reddish, while the paws are black. The frontal part of the face and upper neck is bright brownish-rusty red, while the upper lips are white. The backs of the ears are black or brownish-reddish, while the inner surface is whitish. The top of the tail is brownish-reddish, but lighter in colour than the back and flanks. The underside of the tail is pale grey with a straw coloured tint. A black spot, the location of the supracaudal gland, is usually present at the base of the tail. The tip of the tail is white.

Red foxes have elongated bodies and relatively short limbs. The tail, which is longer than half the body length[52] (70% of head and body length[53]), is long, fluffy and reaches the ground when in a standing position. [...].

•Quesnel's Riverfront Trail is a real jewel! Run, walk, jog or bike on the scenic and peaceful trail that runs along the shore of the Quesnel and Fraser Rivers. It is 5 km in length and takes a leisurely one hour to complete. There are interesting plaques telling of the old days of Quesnel, commemorative trees along the walkway honouring pioneers, and a restored 1906 mining steam shovel. The second phase of the trail system encompasses scenic Baker Creek and the Fraser River, a 4.3 km walk through the treed parks and quiet streets of residential West Quesnel.

A late October snowfall, brilliant sunshine and crisp -2C temperatures made for a perfect day trip for photography around Eight Mile Lake in the Cariboo Mining District (95km to the east of Quesnel, BC).

PS No snow as yet in Quesnel. Still very nice fall daytime weather.

The rowans or mountain-ashes are shrubs or small trees in genus Sorbus of family Rosaceae. [...]. The name "rowan" is derived from the Old Norse name for the tree, raun. Linguists believe that the Norse name is ultimately derived from a proto-Germanic word *raudnian meaning "getting red" and which referred to the red foliage and red berries in the autumn. [...].

The best-known species is the European Rowan Sorbus aucuparia, a small tree typically 4-12 m tall growing in a variety of habitats throughout northern Europe and in mountains in southern Europe and southwest Asia. Its berries are a favourite food for many birds and are a traditional wild-collected food in Britain and Scandinavia. It is one of the hardiest European trees, occurring to 71° north in Vardø in Arctic Norway, and has also become widely naturalised in northern North America.
The Alborz (Elburz) Mountains are a major mountain range in Northern Iran, due south of the Caspian Sea. They extend 600 miles, averaging 9,000 feet elevation, with some peaks considerably higher. [...].

Alborz is a major climatic barrier between the Caspian Sea and the central Iranian plateau. The north side, facing the sea, receives heavy snow and rainfall, and lush forests sweep down to the coastal plain. The south side, in contrast, has few trees, just barren brown wind-swept slopes merging with desert below. Snow covers the tops of the higher mountains for most of the year.
Women in hijab in Damghan, a city in and capital of Damghan County, Semnan Province, Iran.

The word "hijab" or "ḥijāb" (Arabic: حجاب hijaab, pronounced [ħiˈdʒæːb] ~ [ħiˈɡæːb]) refers to both the head covering traditionally worn by Muslim women and modest Muslim styles of dress in general.

The Arabic word literally means curtain or cover (noun). Most Islamic legal systems define this type of modest dressing as covering everything except the face and hands in public.[1][2] According to Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality;[3] the words for a headscarf or veil used in the Qur'an are khimār (خمار) and jilbaab (جلباب), not hijab. Still another definition is metaphysical, where al-hijab refers to "the veil which separates man or the world from God."[2]

Muslims differ as to whether the hijab should be required on women in public, as it is in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia; whether it should be banned in schools, as it is in France and Turkey; or whether it should be left for the women to decide, as it is in the United States.
Damghan (Persian: دامغان, also Romanized as Dāmghān)[1] is a city in and capital of Damghan County, Semnan Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 57,331, in 15,849 families. [...] Damghan was an important city in the Middle Ages, and was the capital of the province of Qumis (Qoomes), but was destroyed by the Afghans in 1723. Few remnants of that time remain, such as the ruined Tari-khaneh mosque with a number of massive columns and wood carvings and two minarets of the 11th century

Tarikhaneh, the oldest mosque in Iran

Tarikhaneh Mosque is in fact the oldest mosque in Iran belonging to the 1st century after arrival of Islam which still preserves its original shape. Tarikhaneh and Nayeen Mosque in Isfahan are the only mosques in the Islamic World which resemble the Medina Mosque. This mosque was built during the 8th century A.D. by imitating Roman, Iranian and Arabic architecture. This is an Arabic design but the building material and architecture is Sassanid. This leads us to believe that originally it had been a fire temple during the Sassanid period, and later the mosque was built over its ruins. One column resembling Sassanian architecture at the eastern wing is a proof of this assertion.

Tarikhaneh Mosque is equipped with a square yard and a gallery with 18 columns facing the Qiblah and the three sides of the yard are surrounded by porticos [A portico (from Italian) is a porch leading to the entrance of a building, or extended as a colonnade, with a roof structure over a walkway, supported by columns or enclosed by walls]. The minaret rising over the mosque is said to belong to Seljuks and the tiled inscription over the minaret is in fact the oldest tile work in Islamic architecture.

The prefix "Tari", a Turkish or Mongol term, means God and "khaneh" is Iranian word for house so the word means the house of God.

Zucchini Relish

Combine and let stand 1 - 2 hours, stirring once in a while, the following:

8 cups of finely chopped, seeded fresh zucchini
2 cups of finely chopped onions
1 cup of finely chopped red bell pepper
1/2 cup of finely chopped green bell pepper
1/4 cup of pickling (coarse) salt

Drain and rinse under cold water. Drain and squeeze out excess water

Combine the following in a heavy saucepan:

2 1/2 cups of granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups of white vinegar
1 teaspoon of celery seed
1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1/2 teaspoon turmeric

Add the drained zucchini mixture and bring to a boil.
Allow to simmer uncovered for 25 minutes.

In a bowl, stir the following until smooth:

2 teaspoons of corn starch
1 tablespoon of cold water

Add to the zucchini mixture and cook for another 5 minutes.

Pour into 4 - 16 oz hot, sterilized jars (leaving 1/8 inch headspace) and tightly cap.

Allow to cool completely and then store in a cool pantry or cupboard.

Serve with meats, fish and poultry (even with pan-fried potatoes). Delicious!

PS The recipe can be doubled (as I did). Enjoy!

.
Have a pleasant evening and thanks for visiting.

The fading light of the evening sun bathes this magnificent, high mountain terrain with striking colours. The Zagros Mountains (Kuhha-ye Zagros) are Iran's second largest mountain range. They have a length of 1500 kilometres from western Iran, from Kurdistan at the border with Iraq to the southern parts of the Persian Gulf.
