oh, truman: he was a pirate. i never took his photo, but he used everett's costume from two years ago.

monroe could barely walk in his awkward max wolf suit pants, but he surely made a good effort. the candy, he figured, was worth it (and then, the brotherly examples of thrill)

everett's own pumpkin was harvested and carved by him (mom did the scooping). the big one was brought home by uncle michael -- he works in the produce department at zupan's and can sometimes score freebies like this -- and jonathan carved. he doesn't have much patience, but it was a hulk of a pumpkin, so it turned out ok.

monroe, we knew, should be max for halloween, a fate decided last year when he was still too young for trick-or-treating (and before the movie was anything more than an open question). naturally, being the youngest, his costume was saved for the last; and though i'm *almost* done, i still haven't finished the cute max knitted hood i started last year in october.

the pants, brilliant in concept, weren't perfect in execution; they were too long, a bit, and the feet should have been more shaped. i was in a hurry. but the toes are adorable and i was proud of my creativity, despite the fact that i finished the costume barely before dark.

everett had learned how to make these owls in class, and decided to lead a group of other kids to make more. he set it up and taught other kids how. so. so. great.

i'd remembered them from the night before; the garage door was open, there were several hip barista-types, they were giggling in that way that hipsters do. the next morning, we went looking for a missing costume piece, and there: that cracked pumpkin, those artfully-placed blue bottles, in which were, i imagined, absinthe and other wicked beverages. delightful.
