I took this picture because at least a couple of the more rabid anti-bikeshare people who spoke at a recent meeting of Manhattan Community Board 2 hollered out (to loud, ignorant cheers) the completely untrue cry, "they're not putting the racks in front of Citibanks, blargh!!!"

Count the violations.

Drivers do whatever they want in this town and we enable it.

Incidentally, the ubiquitous jackass practice of unattended engine idling is what killed preschoolers Hayley Ng and Diego Martinez. Thank goodness, the one terribly-conceived stretch of the bike lane on Manhattan's Broadway is finally getting fixed. I and others suggested to DOT that they swap the locations of the bike lane and the pedestrian plaza. That's not exactly what they're doing, but this change--moving the bike lane to the entirely other side of the street--is probably just as good or better.

Here's the doorway of a Duane Reade on 23rd and 2nd after a 2-car crash sent one of the cars up the curb and into the building. I believe only a driver was injured. (If all crashes injured only drivers, I probably wouldn't be a safety activist...) Video of the other car is at www.youtube.com/watch?v=acKLCULoSQU.

Livery Car, I think. Driver was taken away in an ambulance; my guess was he was going to be okay. A cyclist next to me said that the driver's gas pedal got stuck. I didn't ask him how he knew that but it looked plausible to me.

Three photos of circumstantial evidence of a taxi having run off the road, jumped an entire pedestrian island AND the nearby curb, and destroyed a bike rack on the sidewalk. But those bicyclists are a menace! There are two other photos of the same subject in this Set.

Also, hat tip to Steven Vance for using tag "exit the roadway." A serious problem in NYC, considering, according to an informal count I did, a curb-jumping car injures one or more pedestrians on the sidewalk about once a month or more. More pics: www.flickr.com/photos/tags/exittheroadway/

At 6pm, I swung by the scene of a 12:30 fatal truck-ped crash. Not much to see but this, and some police tape. In the few minutes I was there, I saw two cars blow through already-red lights.

On my ride home I was very disappointed to see what appears to be work on refreshing the paint on a stretch of this, the most failed bike lane in the city. Seems to indicate that they're keeping it. This is the one bike lane that cyclists almost entirely avoid because, placed between two areas where pedestrians should and do feel entitled to meander with their guard down--the sidewalk and the plaza--it gets completely overrun with pedestrians rendering it totally unbikeable.

The DOT is well aware that many people (including myself) have suggested swapping the placement of the lane and the plaza, yet here it appears they're ignoring that informed advice. A shame, since this was one of the very first of the "new" bike lanes the City installed, and elsewhere, the City HAS learned from certain bike lane mistakes and corrected them, but not here, despite all the 2 years+ they've had to see that this lane doesn't work!

Benefits of sidewalk expansions

In action here you can see the benefits of the sidewalk expansions used in Green Light for Midtown aka the new Broadway.

Now, when sidewalks are obstructed (like by the construction pictured here), pedestrian overflow has some place safe and legal to go. It doesn't even interfere with the bike lane!

Unless and until the City starts using my bike lane design, this is how any new bike lanes in ped-dense areas should be installed.
