Lotus Bloom Close Up - Brazos Bend State Park, TX

I'm enamored of these lotus blooms out on 40-Acre Lake at Brazos Bend State Park. They give ove a lovely scent, and they are just so pretty.

A rather uninspiring name for such a pretty little blue flower. The yellow bokeh'd flower behind it is a coneflower. During my walk from the parking area to 40-Acre Lake at Brazos Bend State Park, there wa a field half-full of these two varieties of flowers.

Spider Lilies aka Swamp Lilies

These unique little spring flowers, which bloom in wet, swampy areas, are prolific along the route I take to work. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find a decent parking spot, and the traffic can get pretty heavy (plus the local constabulary tends to stop to see what I am up to when I do this....). It all means I usually don't get a chance to photograph these lovelies.

So I was extremely pleased to find a field of these flowers right at the entrance to Brazos Bend State Park.

Sometimes I have no idea what I have captured (in terms of little details) until I actually open up the photo to be edited on my computer screen. For instance, I remember being so focused on getting a clear shot of the middle of this lotus bloom, that I had no idea I'd captured the little bee zooming in for a landing on the bloom. I didn't see that until the photo was on my laptop screen. Serendipity is a neat thing.

Bluebell Using the Canon 40mm Pancake Lens, 100% Crop

I tend to upload a bunch of photos at one time, but I keep them in private mode for a later time to determine whether to post them to the public, or delete them. I also do this so that I have something to post during those slow times when I am not doing any sort of photo work.

At the time I took this photo, I had just received my cute little Canon 40mm f2.8 STM pancake lens. Talk about a darling little lens. And it's a GREAT lens, too! Canon actually managed to create a decent non-L lens. I published a post to my blog site comparing this lens to another lens I have, if you are interested in taking a look.

So this is a photo I took while out at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, of what I believe is called a bluebell (at least, that's what it looks like in my Texas wildflower book). And, it's a 100% crop of the original.

Common Sunflower in Black & White

Or: Fun With Monochrome.

I like black & white. I love the delineation of textures, shadow, the play of light and dark, and the funky things that can be done with a monochrome.

This is a bw conversion of a brilliant yellow wildflower found at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. I used Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro to make the conversion.

Ok, one more flower photo taken at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge on a rather flat, overcast day. My 70-200 just couldn't reach the birds out there (and there were alot, as there always are), so I opted instead for some flower images like this passionflower, which was growing in secluded spots alongside the weed-tangled shores of "Alligator Nest Pond"......the names of these places are given for a good reason, I'm pretty sure.

Passionflower (aka Maypop or Apricot Vine)

My weekend afternoon trip out to the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge was a bit fruitless in terms of bird shots - they are just too far out of reach of my 70-200 (which I purchased more for wedding and event photography than bird/wildlife photography). So I focused more on the wildflowers I saw this time - flowers that I neglected to spot during my prior visits. There were several passionflowers growing in secluded spots along the weed-tangled shore of Alligator Nest Pond (I'm sure they have a reason for this name).

As usual, I was restless on a Saturday afternoon and looking for something photographic to occupy my time (eschewing the necessary chores that *really* needed to be done). The day was overcast and rainy, yet I thought I *might* be able to capture some more interesting cloudwork at the Brazoria NWR. So, I ditched washing dishes, grabbed my gear, and headed out the door.

It was indeed overcast, with very few scenery photos to be had. And of course, my 70-200 is not long enough for any real closeup bird images. Instead, I looked around and found flowers I had either not seen during my previous visits, or had not bothered to photography.

I love Indian Blankets. They are so bright, colorful, and cheerful.

Old Age Blowing In The Wind

I know, a rather solemn title. But it just seemed to fit. The wind was blowing, and this was the aftermath of what was once a lovely bloom. I'm also kind of surprised I managed to get a nice clear image, *because* the wind was blowing all of the flowers and plants around at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge.

The Brazoria NWR has all sorts of these flowers planted along a median in the parking lot. And while my current TX wildflower book is not a very good one, it at least did have this particular flower listed. I found them to be the most fascinating of all the flowers I saw at the refuge.

Every spring, these beautiful red spider lilies pop up behind my mother's home, right next to the AC unit. Most years, I've missed their blooming, but hopefully I will remember to look come this Spring.

Yet another reprocessed shot of some not-so-wild colombine growing next to the Park Cafe outside of the St. Mary entrance to Glacier National Park, Montana. Taken back in 2008 with a Canon 5D while attending a week-long photo workshop within the park.

When I was working on this photo 2 years ago, I had a really difficult time with the lighting and contrast differences. So I pushed this shot aside in favor of something else. I don't think I had Lightroom back them. If I did, I apparently didn't know how to use it very much or very well, because this time around, Lightroom helped me with the exposure problems within this shot.

"Wild" Colombine - Rework

These gorgeous colombines are not exactly "wild". They were growing in thick patches along the sides of the Park Cafe, which is next to the St. Mary entrance to the park. We had stopped to get the sack lunch sandwich order the workshop organizers had ordered for us. While the assistants were in the building, we all spied these flowers and immediately grabbed our cameras and started shooting. I didn't have a macro lens for this trip and berated myself for not renting one. I did the best I could with my 24-105 lens. When I looked at this shot back in 2008, I was disappointed with the lighting and didn't have enough experience to do any proper sort of editing. I am not even sure I had Lightroom at that time. I found the CD with these Raw files on it and reprocessed it using Lightroom 3 and CS 5 and liked the result enough to post here on Flickr.
