Happy Deep-Depth-of-Field Wednesdy! (Somehow I don't think that will catch on.)

Anyway, this is the situation on the ground at Mauna Kea, as it were... People are pretty much free to walk/snowboard/sled/etc. wherever they want, and these patterns are at least in part a result of all that activity, though I'm sure the sometimes very strong wind does its part as well.

Here I learned that 1/50 is kind of an awkward shutter speed for capturing waves lapping up against the shore. It's not quite sharp, but not really pleasantly blurred, either. For that reason, it probably looks best at this size... But if you want to check it out bigger, here it is large on black.

This beach is a popular resting place for turtles. It's also a popular place for tourists to get closer to the turtles than they're supposed to. I find a telephoto lens plus some aggressive cropping to be an extremely acceptable alternative.

On my to-do list: Get better at holding lenses directly parallel to my desired focal plane. I thought it would be relatively easy to get a little bit of sand all in focus... In the end I had to crop pretty substantially to get this amount of focus, and this was after a number of complete focus failures.

I almost didn't do a lava rock closeup shot. I kept on thinking there would be a place that begged for closer examination, but I never really saw one (though this wasn't bad). Maybe my eyes aren't well-trained enough in seeing the world close up.

I confess to being a little underwhelmed by Volcanoes National Park. But that didn't stop me from taking photographs nonetheless, and I guess there are a few I'm okay with.

If you're on the Big Island and trying to decide what helicopter tour to choose, I can definitely recommend one of the doors-off flights, especially for photography purposes. The wind can sometimes be a little strong, but I imagine that shooting through a window would have been pretty frustrating at times.
The wind can sometimes be a little strong, but I imagine that shooting through a window would have been pretty frustrating at times.

Definitely check this one out large on black!

There are a couple different spots from which to photograph this cool waterfall. It turns out that the spot I chose didn't make it easy to get the entire waterfall system into the shot at 18 mm. Then I was too lazy to walk all the way around to try a different angle, so this is the most complete shot I've got.
