Kovalam beach on the Arabian Sea is 16 km frrom Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The sea port of Vizhinjam is 3 km away.

The sands on the beaches in Kovalam are blackish on account of the existence of ilmenite and thorazite.

There are three beaches at Kovalam, separated by outcrops protruding out to sea. The largest one is called Light House Beach where there is a red and white light house. The second is Hawah Beach which was the first topless beach in India. Topless bathing is illegal now. These two beaches.are popular with visitors.

The northern part of the beach is known as Samudra Beach. A small hill separates it from the southern side. Samudra Beach does not have tourists. Local fishermen pursue their business here.
