No double exposure here: I explain the process by which this photograph was taken on this earlier shot. It's quite incredible to think that the two images (this one and the one I've just linked to) were taken by moving the camera an inch or two to the side and adjusting the focus.

There is something about supermarkets. I love all large, open yet enclosed spaces, but supermarkets in particular - so long as they are high-ceilinged and well-lit - are among my favourite places. My local Sainsbury's is particularly lovely at sunset, when the entire building is bathed in a soft orange glow and I can easily spend an hour, even two, wandering the aisles in a dreamlike state, forgetting the world outside. In the days when my core group of friends and I lived in the same area, our communal Sunday afternoon supermarket trips became social occasions: to share that experience with someone is to discover, if only in a materialistic sense, what they want, what they need, what matters most to them. If I was asked to list the people who have been most important to me in my life, one thing among others that they will all have in common is that we have shopped together in supermarkets. Not that we went into a supermarket together to buy, say, a bottle of water, but that we shopped; that we walked around the supermarket and filled our trolley or trollies together.

The other day, for the first time, I did my supermarket shopping while drunk. It was surreal, and thankfully the only casualties were my now-bruised knee and two jars of Lloyd Grossman sauces.

Set photography for the music video of The Gedda Headz' first single, shot on location in Hong Kong. It was my first collaboration with the director Jean-Julien Pous, whom I worked with again in Rotterdam on the set of his short film Aurore. My photography from these shoots can be seen here (Gedda Headz) and here (Aurore).

My collaborations with JJP have produced some of my most rewarding work, so I'm excited to be working with him again in the coming week, this time in Paris.

Jonathan Morton, Scottish Ensemble

Commissioned work by The Scottish Ensemble, whose 2011-2012 brochure has been published comprising photographs taken for the most part by me. This is an alternative to the image which forms the cover. The ensemble's general manager had told me the concept - one player still with the others motion blurred - but the setup of this shot here - artistic director Jonathan Morton standing as stilly as possible on a raised platform while the other players moved frantically around him - was Kenny's brainchild.

I had to dust off the rarely used tripod for this shoot: EXIF here is Nikon D700, Nikon 85mm shot at ISO 100, f/6.3 and 1 second.

Stirling Christmas Lights

I do a lot of work for Stirling Council, but it was nice at the turning on of their Christmas lights to do something more creatively rewarding for them than councillors shaking hands. Plenty of colour and festive cheer.

There is an aspect of this image had me totally perplexed when I first reviewed it on the camera’s screen. I examined it for a long time, but couldn't make sense of it. Once I uploaded it and looked at it on the screen of the Mac, my mistake was obvious, but I’m interested to know whether it’s a trick of perception that will surprise others too.
