Ethics of Anxiety

From the expiry of my final Young Person's Railcard to realising that my little cousin Chloe (pictured), whose birth seems like a recent memory, has already started primary school, I'm reminded these days more than ever of the fact that, at least in the literal, numerical sense, I'm getting older. But more than that, I find myself doing 'grown-up' things with increasing regularity: dinner parties instead of warehouse parties, letting the wine breathe, loading and unloading a dishwasher, Sunday afternoon drives to the supermarket, going to bed before midnight.

Where I don't sleep so easy some nights because I'm wondering what that all means.

In accordance with what seems to be becoming a tradition for me, I spent my first night in Singapore wandering the streets alone, stopping only for food, beer and cigarettes. I didn't have to go far from my hotel before my attention was arrested, first by the sounds of percussion. At a nearby food court - the kind with character: cracked tiles, fluorescent lights, brightly coloured plastic chairs and smoking, loudmouthed locals; not pristine tables, polished glass and wealthy tourists - a troupe of young men was performing a dragon dance. With each clash of cymbals and each bang of the drums, I felt the stresses of air travel being beaten away and my senses opening, to be filled with music, colours and the smell of durian. I remembered the first night I ever spent in this city, and felt glad to be back.

"Hot pot, less commonly known as Chinese fondue or steamboat, refers to several East Asian varieties of stew, consisting of a simmering metal pot of stock at the center of the dining table. While the hot pot is kept simmering, ingredients are placed into the pot and are cooked at the table. Typical hot pot dishes include thinly sliced meat, leafy vegetables, mushrooms, wontons, egg dumplings, and seafood. Vegetables, fish and meat should be fresh. The cooked food is usually eaten with a dipping sauce."

George Orwell once said that by the age of fifty, every man has the face he deserves. My Dad, as he approaches that age, looks remarkably youthful, especially considering that this was taken first thing in the morning. If Orwell is right, I'm afraid the outlook is not so bright for my own fifty year old visage.

Titanic Dinner

The dinner parties hosted by my friend Dr Tobias Joss are renowned for their exquisite taste, but last week he outdid himself with a dinner to mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic. Ten of us were invited to enjoy the same eleven course menu as was served to the ship's first class passengers. Dress code was white tie. Pictured here is course number eight: venison stuffed squab with parmentier potatoes, red cabbage and watercress. Some may have realised that I paraphrased the 1993 Ferrero Rocher advert 'The Ambassador's Party' in my opening to this caption, and I will do so again. But Ferrero Rocher, at £3.99 down at the garage? No. This was really spoiling us.

Yung Kee Restaurant

The Michelin-starred Yung Kee Restaurant appears from time to time on lists of the world's best restaurants, and Tatler magazine has for twenty one years in a row named it Hong Kong's best restaurant. The highlight for me was the famous roast goose (pictured), which was quite extraordinary. Despite a couple of flaws and mediocrities in the rest of the food, it was a great meal, but I've yet to find the one to compete with Gauthier.
