I visited the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum Saturday and enjoyed the amazing Raptor Free Flight exhibit. Here a young barn owl is showing his wingspan.

We hiked yesterday, and managed to stay dry. The desert is always happy for any moisture that comes its way. Spring flowers are about ready to put on a show. Stay tuned.

Snow and Rain in the Desert

My wife and I hiked yesterday and were rewarded with beautiful views of the Santa Catalina Mountains topped with snow. We had 1.5 inches of rain in Tucson, but over a foot of snow at higher elevations.

I hiked the Yentman Trail today in Tucson Mountain Park. Lots of beautiful giant saguaro cactuses and this old, abandoned homestead.

I did a wonderful 6.4-mile hike in the Rincon Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, today. I am partial to this form of prickly pear, but only for looking at. If you accidentally brush up against one you will suffer -- not from the spikes, but from the little "hairs" that surround the base of the thorns.

Most prickly pear cactus have yellow flowers. The desert was full of them today while I hiked. But there was one I found that had this luscious shade of orange.

One if my favorite desert plants. It gets green leaves for short periods following rains, more often appearing dead. In April and May it produces red flowers. I'm still waiting to get my "best" ocotillo shot.

On my hike today I watched a roadrunner chasing a ground squirrel. It was a lot of drama played out on this grand desert stage. I'm sure the roadrunner went away hungry.
