Overcast Evening

I was hoping for some wild skies this past weekend, but all I got were dull ones. This was taken out at Snowshoe camp, overlooking Wakomata Lake, using my new Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. This lens is incredibly sharp, and couldn't be happier with it. I think I'll be able to use it for more landscapes once I make the jump to an FX camera body.

This GGO could sense something moving under the snow, and was on a mission to search out his next meal. He was hopping from post to post and hovering in the air in complete silence.

Great Grey

I was able to capture this close up shot after this Great Grey perched itself on a post fairly close to where we were standing and having the mighty 600mm f/4 attached. A little different background would have been nice, as it's a little boring as is, but sometimes you just have to take what you're given and be happy with it. I think what I like most is that you can see the blood on his beak.

This evening has been a real treat. It was the first time I've seen the majestic Great Grey owl in person and I had the privilege of photographing a few different ones with some great friends. It's been a slow couple months lately, hardly getting out with the camera and posting new stuff. However, I spent the last week with my sister and her family in the Dryden area, and got out for some quality time with the camera. My sister has some amazing property, that is just full of wildlife, so I spent a few hours in their blind and captured a number of shots of the numerous deer that frequent their backyard. The second time I went out, we had a fresh blanket of snow on the ground that made for some great photo opportunities and the morning sun was shining that just made everything pop.

I'm still going through the photos I took a few weeks ago, and this one caught my eye. I really liked the expression on mom's face as her little one was playing around, and I think the split tone treatment gives a little bit of that "a mother's love" feeling.

Last Light on Mij Lake

My long weekend was spent camping out on Mijinemungshing Lake, which is in the northern part of Lake Superior Provincial Park. The weather was great, the views were even better, and it was an all around great weekend.

A thunder storm was rolling in quick, but there were no interesting clouds or colours that I had expected. Even without all that, I'm still happy with what I was able to capture.

Taken with a Nikon D7000 and NIkkor AF-S 10-24mm wide angle lens. For filters, I think I still had on a Kenko Pro 1D 3-stop ND, but should have taken it off.

These were taken the same night as my previous post, but this is a different GG and taken later in the day. I don't normally group shots like this together, but they just worked so well together that it was hard not to. Plus the colours in the background from the blown out barn and shed make them quite interesting to view I think. However, I'm a little disappointed that there's a tiny bit of motion blur on the last shot (owl's head), but I don't think it's bad enough to discard it.

Because of the aspect ratio of this one, I would definitely recommend viewing this in the Original file size to see more detail in each individual shot.

Hide & Seek

This young deer and I were playing a little game of hide & seek in the long wild grasses in the field. It kept wondering around, and I had to try and find it while keeping extremely quite and try to lock focus through the tall grass. Nothing special with a side profile shot, but I really liked the sharpness and how the grass added to the shot.

I was out walking around my sister's house, where there were a couple old bird houses that have seen better days. I really liked how the 300mm f/2.8 blew out the background, and the overall light in the scene.

Here's another Buck shot taken from my Sister's place, while in the blind. This time he was much closer, and brought his lady friend with him who snuck into the shot. It was pretty amazing watching them up so close, and gotta say that their sense of smell and sound is astonishing. Even with the D7000 on quite mode, and being in an enclosed wooden blind, they still heard me and sensed I was around.

This shot was taken for my dad, as he's a sucker for tractors. This is the tractor in the back field at my sisters place, which was sitting collecting the first snowflakes this past week.

Wakomata Blues

I wasn't going to post this, but because my photostream is in need of something new, here it is. This was shot during the August long weekend while I was on vacation at Snowshoe Camp. I've shot numerous sunsets here, and although I'm always on the lookout for a new location or view, I was just content on relaxing and not venturing too far. The sunsets were nothing to write home about either, but I kinda like how simple this came out. The sky had lit up for about 5 minutes with some nice pink streaks, but by the time I got my gear setup, the colour had disappeared and left me a little disappointed.

Taken with a Nikon D80 and Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm wide angle lens. I had used a 3-stop Singh-Ray Reverse Graduated Neutral Density filter and a 3-stop Kenko Pro 1D Neutral Density filter.

Not even the frogs are safe from the mosquitoes.

I took this during a small hike at an old copper mine while out on the ATVs this past weekend. My D7000 is in with Nikon to have the focusing calibrated, so I limped along with my older D80 that has a shutter button issue that is incredibly frustrating. I haven't been out much because of this, and I'm getting a little worried that it won't be back in time for my weeks vacation out at camp next week. The D80 still has some life in it though, as I was pretty happy with how this one turned out.

Red Rock

With Lake Superior's water level being low, and the waves being quite calm, I was able to get down into areas I've never been to before while out at Gros Cap. I really liked this particular shot, mainly because of the rich vibrant reds in the granite.

This was another early evenning shot, as the storm that was in the forecast never materialized and sunset was pretty uneventful.

Gros Cap Granite

The weather forecast was calling for a high chance of lightning & thunder for around 8pm that day, so I made my way out to Gros Cap with an umbrella in hand, with high hopes to capture some lighting. This is something that I've yet to do, and was really hoping that a good lightning storm would occur. Unfortunately the storm didn't materialize as forecasted, and I didn't even get any interesting clouds. Total bummer for sure. But because things have been pretty quite in the shooting department, here's a ho-hum shot from that evening.

The red granite rock is amazing in this spot, and there always seems to be something different to shoot every time I visit. This time, with the water level being low and waves pretty calm, I was able to get much closer to the shore and capture the granite spine leading to the water.

Taken with a Nikon D7000 and Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm wide angle lens. A Kenko Pro 1D 3-stop ND & Singh-Ray 3-stop RGND filters were used to balance the exposure.

Why fish, when you can have a perfectly good nap out in the sun? That seemed to be the theme for the May long weekend, where the weather was absolutely gorgeous. This here is Jay, who was the pro napper for the weekend, who had a sweet burn to prove just how nice the sun was, lol.

Here's a northern view of Mijinemungshing Lake, taken from our campsite. I have a number of shots that I'm quite happy with, so it's been a struggle trying to determine which ones to edit and post. I'm sure there will be a couple more over the next few days.
