Lake effect snow squalls mask the setting sun, and the St. Joseph, Michigan lighthouses. Ice on the outer light is building up due to the wind and waves.
The lens hood acted like a funnel, gathering the driving snow and covering the lens; cleaning was necessary every two minutes.

Marram grass refuses to grow on the windward side of this dune along Kintzele Ditch. Winds blow the sands away before the grass can take root.

Dan takes a break after a long two mile hike, and a steep climb to the top of a wooded dune. The view was worth the climb! The snow melted from this side of the dune, but in the shaded areas, a layer of snow remained.

Following a windstorm created by Hurricane Sandy, much of the newly planted Marram grass was uprooted by the winds. National Park rangers and volunteers gathered the uprooted plants and replanted them to help retard the erosion of Mt. Baldy.

Mt. Baldy, a "living" sand dune in Michigan City, Indiana, is on the move. Winds carry the sand from the windward side of the dune (facing Lake Michigan) to the leeward side (opposite the wind), in effect, moving the dune south grain by grain.

First Light

Arriving at Mt. Baldy a few minutes before 7am, gave Chris and I time to hike to the top of the dune and set up our cameras just in time to watch the sunrise. The first peek of light illuminated patches of the shifting sands and some treetops. Moments later, the sun disappeared behind the gray overcast sky- not to be seen again that day.

Gale force winds blew tons of sand onto local roadways, as the effects of Hurricane Sandy were felt along the Indiana shore of Lake Michigan. Waves were in excess of 20 feet, with windspeeds reaching 60 mph. Some roads were almost impassible, as vehicles became stuck in the soft sands.

A group of visitors slide down one of the sand dunes on Central Beach. Not a good idea - for a lot of reasons, but erosion is the main concern, followed by impalement by a hidden branch.

Mt. Baldy is a living sand dune. It's moving about four feet every year, and is slowly burying the woods in front of it. Soon, these trees will die and be completely buried, only to be uncovered a few centuries from now.

The Bailey Generating Station borders Cowles Bog, marking a confluence of man and nature. Looking west, one sees industry, looking all other directions - nature.
Following a two mile hike, the beach marks both the destination and halfway point- since the hike back is just as far.
