This beach house has been updated with a garage, but the addition is forgivable as the owner didn't compromise the integrity of the building by overdoing it. Love the rock chimney and the space created between the garage and entry is pretty inviting.

Plan No. 1037 is one of my personal favorites in this 1948 plan book. I love the half round kitchen wall and all those windows. Sixteen plans are posted at Mid Century Home Style. Many of the HBPS houses were built all over the PDX metro area.

This house and plan were shown in the 1923 plan book, The Books of a Thousand Homes. It featured 500 small house plans. Most of them really were small by today's standards. This one reflects the post WWI movement away from the horizontally oriented Craftsman-style to the more modern and very romantic aesthetic of the 1920s. This particular plan was by Olsen & Urbain, Architects.

This small cottage bungalow was designed by O. M. Akers in about 1923 for J. R. Blows, one of the bazillion builders that were putting up small houses all over Portland. It's in Ladd Addition which adds to its charm. Need to do a bit more research to confirm. It looks like the original trio of casement windows have been replaced, but it doesn't seem too much the worse for wear.

Wandering through Bungalow Heaven in Pasadena over the Christmas break, I found this sweet place. It's not identical to the original plan, but that hood is distinctive, so I think it was probably a customized version of the plan found in the 1925 book. You be the judge!

It's gorgeous and it's for sale! Double landscaped lot in Santa Barbara ... I think the neighborhood is called Upper East. This was built by a rich Easterner ... need to do more research to confirm.

California is all Bungalow Heaven ... not just Pasadena. There's not a block in central Santa Barbara that doesn't have a couple pretty little bungalows like this one.

North of LA ... starting in SB ... I started noticing many houses with arches incorporated into the porches. By Santa Cruz, some of the arches were half round ... it would be interesting to do more regional research on their type and distribution. That will have to wait for another trip.
