Y-wing - Fuselage

Greebling is the most fun part of making a Y-wing, because the detailing is not set in stone. They usually have a shield generator, another round detail near the center, and piping that runs to the engines. Outside of that, it really varies, in-universe and out. You get to be a little creative here, something you don't often get to do when making a model of an existing property.

The front wedge on the cockpit was originally used on Larry Lars' Steampunk Y-wing, and Edulyoung's Chrome Y-wing, both from 2008. It was later used on Ewok In Disguise's 2011 "Ewok's Revenge", a V-19 Torrent/Y-wing Ugly. I used cheese slopes at the back, like the Ewok's Revenge, though that was coincidental or subconscious on my part.

The struts that run along the engine have a tendency to sag or arch, but they are strong enough to support the ship if stood on end.

I really wanted get the yellow striping exact. This seemed like the best piece for it. It took a long time to solve the various gap, SNOT, and connection problems, but it worked out.
The hinges that hold up the cockpit roof double as the A4's computer. This hinge, the narrow interior, and the pilot's placement make a BTL-S3 (two man) variant impossible without radical changes.

Sources place the ship at 16 meters. In the scale of 1 foot=1 stud, the true scale is 52.5 studs long. This model is about 54 studs long. Width and height tend to vary from source to source.

The fuselage is (sort've) monochromatic. The different components and engine elements weren't necessarily distinct colors in the movies, but were different because of wear, stains, and damage. There is a mixture of new and old grey to add some slight variety, and I also intentionally used faded bricks. I've come to prefer single-color greebling because it seems a little clearer to the eye.

Keeping the arms essentially flat and square was one of the most important things I wanted to get right. It helps create a low, imposing stance, and contrasts the huge engines.

Even though Lego does not make 6x6 cylinders, there are no shortage of techniques to fill the gap between 4x4 and 8x8. This was my favorite option, even though they are just slightly under 6x6. These also work (the struts along the engine would effectively cover the edges where they meet at the corners), but doing so leaves no place to connect the engines to the body without making the cylinder asymmetrical. The cheese slopes also allow for greebling on the sides.
The domes are attached from the inside. I didn't want to use the existing hinge, because it would make it less truly cylindrical. I guess I also wanted the challenge.

If these were available in light bley, I would have gone with that instead. They do add a little color variety, and help "ground" the back of the engine.

Lego tends to make whole circles, rather than rings, so options tend to be slim when replicating this part of the ship. The use of tubing for the ring was inspired by Flail's excellent Y-wing. His has been a favorite of mine, long after its debut eight years ago.
The steering vanes aren't entirely accurate, but I like how they came out anyway.

Like a lot of kids that grew up around the same time as me, I loved the Bionicle series. I collected basically every set for the first few years, with the original 2001 lineup being my favorite to this day. Right from the beginning, the mysterious setting fascinated me. The whole thing was so fresh and its universe was so richly illustrated across the ambitious methods of multimedia storytelling. You had all these different angles from between the comics, the online game, the website, or those great, weird CGI short films that would be here or there. They pieced the story together almost like a legend.

5 or so years after I quit collecting them, and a few years after I had sold off my entire collection, I hit upon the idea of revisiting the Bionicle universe (which had exponentially grown in size after I had lost interest with it). The concept of rebooting and re-imagining IP's has been so popular in the last ten years or so of pop culture; not just with companies seeking to make money from the nostalgia factor of the masses, but also among fans that love to see their favorite series' in these strange, yet familiar new interpretations. The fans create this stuff just because they love it, and want to see what interesting ways it can be reconstructed.

That's what this is. I wanted to make all six of the original Toa figures in a brickbuilt style. There were all these great things you could do. With the Lewa and Kopaka figures, you could create the thinner, more wiry build that their original figures suggested with their narrower shoulders. Make them more robotic and machine-like. Subdue the colors a bit with dark red for Tahu, or dark blue for Gali. Make the Onua figure tower over the other five, exaggerating his brute strength. Pohatu would have hydraulic, large legs based on his kicking function the set had. There were all these neat things you could do that the story and descriptions of these characters suggested.

The only two that were truly finished were the Tahu and Kopaka ones, which are shown here. I technically finished the Onua and Lewa ones a while ago, but they still required some polish that they never received before being dismantled. I may come back to this idea again someday and finish all 6.

I was never sure if the set meant to convey that he didn't have a right hand at all, and that he had a sword, or that he was just holding a sword, but for this, I opted for the former.

My take on Kopaka from the original line of Bionicle sets. I wanted to play up the idea of the multiple eyes. So this one has six. The three that are located above the rest of his head and meant to move independently, allowing for a wide field of vision. He's got a serrated ice sword and a large shield that can be attached to his back. This one is built on a lighter platform than the fire (Tahu) one, making him more agile, (yet also less durable) combatant.
