On my way back to the hotel I spoke to the taxi driver.
When the plumpish uncle found out I was from 星光部队 he became so eager to share with me about his own experiences, and even commented that it was my honour to be able to serve my own country. He was formerly from the ROC Special Forces.

In their countryside where I was training in, it is not uncommon to see farmers offer training soldiers bags of oranges or free rides to the next check point.
Contrast this back home where we hear people STOMPing about servicemen not giving up seats to the elderly on public trains.

Strange and yet very true.
I'm not unpatriotic but
We seriously have much to learn from them.

Photo taken during a ceremonial change of honour guards at Martyr's Shrine, Taipei.
Built in memory of people who lost their lives during the establishment of the Republic of China(Taiwan). These people in uniform are the military police who guard the main gate, and who have been rigidly trained to stand like expressionless statues and remain unmoved by the teasing of tourists. Amazing.
