Mountain Cabin in Stanley Idaho.

Telephoto landscape - I love finding objects like that will make good telephoto landscapes. Of course wildlife is my favorite but many things will do.

This cabin was about 3/4th of a mile away and the peak is about 25 miles away but by shooting this landscape with a 500mm lens it makes i seem as though the cabin is at the foot of the peak.

When pre-visualizing a landscape I don't just look for what is there, I look for what could be.

Getting lucky with the light at Lucky Peak. How many jokes can I make with the name? Not enough! Anyway, the roads were not very nice out here and stitching together an HDR panorama is not very nice either, and Photomerge was not very nice about aligning things properly, but all that not-niceness still made a fairly nice panorama. And that's what matters.

Quite similar to another shot from this set, but slightly zoomed in and reprocessed using different HDR techniques in Photomatix for a smoother, more natural look. Those thunderclouds were gorgeous against the evening light on the hills.

Tonight I did everything the way it's supposed to be done - I waited for golden hour, drove out into the foothills away from all the houses, brought a tripod to get longish exposures at high f-stops / low ISOs, bracketed everything...there's hope for me yet. The results weren't absolutely spectacular, but the sunset light on the snow and the random rock out in the middle of nowhere were pretty nice. Maybe now I'll do things the professional way more often. Except most of the time I'm lazy and it's cold at sunset...

I took a mad dash over to the Sawtooths yesterday, about a 5 hour drive one way and shot for the afternoon then returned after this sunset.

It was tough weather but I knew that going in but sunset finally provided some light. The Salmon River Valley is so pretty but in winter so much of it is inaccessible because of snowed over roads. i was hoping the road to Red Fish Lake would be open but it wasn't.

This is another area I should try to spend more time shooting but I don't think I will make very many more winter trips here unless someday I finally have enough camera gear and I buy a snowmobile :D

This one needs a bit of a disclaimer attached to it - the sunset yesterday evening did not look like this in the least. The skies were bland, the hills blocked any sunset light, it just wasn't that spectacular. On the other hand, I didn't drop in completely new skies or anything - I just shifted the white balance, saturated the colors, and dropped the exposure on the sky (3-stop brackets helped a lot with this). So the sky and reflections in the stream really did look like this at heart - they just needed a little help.

Does this make the photo a fake? I don't know. You tell me.
