Canadian kids get failing grade for physical activity (April 26/11)

According to the report card, only seven per cent of Canadian youth and children get the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Only nine per cent of boys and a mere four per cent of girls meet the guidelines, the report said.

Obesity has overtaken smoking as a health risk and it is a rapidly emerging problem.

Obesity has bumped smoking as the top perinatal health concern, and new Canadian research is showing a dizzying number of pregnancy and delivery complications in over-weight women.

The BC research showed obese moms (with a body mass index of at least 30) are more likely to have longer labours culminating in such caesarean sections which present their own risks such as infections. The risk of flesh eating diease is also greater as well as a tripled rate of stilbirths and higher rates of miscarriages and diabetes.

This was my view last night around 9 pm from my Desert Hot Springs home. The Hathaway fire burning in Morongo Valley peaking the crest of the mountains. Never seen anything like this before. The shot is a long exposure, 30 seconds and is straight out of the camera.

Just so we are clear, I am in no danger at the moment. The winds are picking up something fierce but it would be a long shot to make it here.

View in awe of nature ... unless someone started it, then shoot them and come back and view.

Walking to work, I passed this man in the alley, pulled out my camera and snapped off this image...then my darn battery died. I was bummed as I think this could have been a special shot for me. As long as my best shots have not been taken yet, I guess I should be happy with this.

PSNI officer on High Street Belfast. I approached her and asked to take a photograph of her gun. I didn't have my camera out so when i produced my bulky EoS3 she said oh i thought you were going to use a phone. Oh no says i "Keeping it old school with a film camera." She had a lovely smile which sadly youse all can't see for security reasons.
Anyhoo the massive and i mean massive Police presence on Sat for the G8 rally really did do the job of keeping trouble to a bare minimum. The location chosen on the out reaches of the British Isles in Co Fermanagh was perfect for keeping disruption and trouble to a minimum and was surely a factor in it's choice. It would be interesting to find out how many prospective protesters were turned back either in Scotland, Wales, Liverpool and the republic.
So the overkill worked. What i like about this photo is that i previsualised it and it is pretty much how i saw it. (Though to be fair there was a slight over exposure but ps sorted that)

Spent the afternoon of Father's day sitting in my In-Law's back yard enjoying beer and watching the local wildlife. They have a pretty good variety of birds that frequent their yard including swallows, grackles, hummingbirds, and a pair of orioles. At one point we had 4 robins coming in close to enjoy some cherries he had put out. This guy had just finished eat a few before going back up to the top of the block wall.
