LEGO Techniques Pool

A place to demonstrate the 'technical' aspects of building with LEGO. Think of it as a visual library of SNOT ideas, build techniques, guides etc. It's not for models just small examples (unless of course the two are the same).

Read the guidelines

Finger Hinge Sandwich - Stud Reversal

.Tromas has added a photo to the pool:

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book, but I just realized there really isn't a clear example of it in the LEGO Techniques group.

So for those that weren't familiar with it...and since I don't carry random parts in my pockets (I really should start doing that!), I figured I would use my mad drawing skillz.

Simply put each half of the hinge facing opposite directions and sandwich between bricks, plates, tiles, <del>bread</del> etc.

Hinges:

Here's the Eldorado ACe front truck detail. This unit will probably not run very often so I'm pretty comfortable with this pilot, but for a unit that runs a lot I fear this would be too low and too weak. I haven't run it around the test track for hours yet, but I have a hunch. Stay tuned.

How it's done.

My ongoing battle with the eanos. This time with another, yet very simple technique: Just insert plates between the studs of other plates which are 90 degrees turned, to create a 1 plate offset.

Still not satisfied, since it makes the the wagon over 10 studs longer than it should be in 1:45 scale. Decided to share it anyways because I like the idea behind it.

Anyway: Back to the drawing board (ehm bricks) again!

Suspension

Andrew Somers has added a photo to the pool:

I've not posted anything lego since April 6th, apparently...
>.>

Anyhow, while redoing the design of my Bullpup trucks, I stumbled upon this little suspension system. While this system isn't used for the redesign, I thought it was nifty enough to share, as well as be an update for my recently inactive photostream.

System should be easy enough to figure out, and the bracket shown is the type you'll need, should you choose to build it.

I'll post actual builds sometime soon <del>I hope</del> I promise!

This is the internal structure I developed to build the Engine section on my Buzz Ground Effects Racer
;)

Bonus feature: Not only does technique allow you to build and mount a nice roundish (8 sided) engine section, it also provides studded surfaces on top, bottom, both sides and on each 45 degree angle for attaching plates, etc!

HINT: This may also be a useful technique for buildings, towers, castles, etc
Windmill Concept

A few years ago during a Stajinaria Chat session Tim and I were discussing ideas for making windmills, this was for a project that he was working on later revealed as Elmore. I had suggested using minifig flippers connected to an octagonal bar frame using the 1L Bar with Claw. One of the benefits of this design is the ability to put a slight pitch on the blades similar to a real life windmill. I have always wanted to knock up this concept to see what it looks like, but I didn't have any Light Grey Flippers to make it. I didn't feel comfortable using flippers of other colours which I have a ton of, I feel they would not have captured the look of the galvanized sheet metal that the blades are made out of. Anyway I finally bit the bullet and bought some Light Grey flippers and decided to knock it up to satisfy my curiosity.
