Nitens Flickr Gadgets Pool

I'm creating this group as a place to discuss new features and to help with support requests about my Flickr Gadgets:

• Group Trackr
dev.nitens.org/flickr/group_trackr.php

Group Trackr allows you to track and plot growth statistics for public Flickr groups. Graphs displaying group growth are automatically updated on a daily basis and can be linked from external websites. Full group statistics can be syndicated via RSS/ATOM feeds and exported in CVS/TSV format.

• EXIF Explorer
(forthcoming)

EXIF Explorer analyzes your Flickr photostream, generates a report with your most common camera settings and allows you to browse your recent photos by camera model, aperture, focal length, exposure and ISO speed.

Group Trackr offline

dartar has added a photo to the pool:

UPDATE. Group Trackr is live again!

As some of you may have noticed, the Flickr Gadgets website (including Group Trackr) is down since a few days. The timing is quite infelicitous since we were going to celebrate the subscription of the 10,000th group, to introduce new features in the group reports and to publish some results of the first year of analysis on Flickr group dynamics.

My hoster (Dreamhost, FYI) candidly wrote in to say that they "disabled my server because it was generating too much traffic". This happened last Saturday without any notice and should give you an idea of how professional these guys are (should you ever consider Dreamhost to host your website, think twice).

The good news is that we are still tracking the daily evolution of groups that were subscribed to Group Trackr before May 10 on a private mirror. Unfortunately, it will take some time before we settle on a new hoster and the graphs and group reports become available again. Apologies for the inconvenience, further announcements will be made in the Nitens group discussion forums.

Thanks for your patience.

EXIF Explorer preview

dartar has added a photo to the pool:

I have cleaned up a bit the code for my new geeky flickr gadget: EXIF Explorer, a tool to extract statistics based on EXIF data.

What it does
It analyzes your Flickr photostream, generates a report with your most common camera settings and allows you to browse your recent photos by camera model, aperture, focal length, exposure and ISO speed.

How can you help
I'm going to release the first public version of EXIF Explorer as soon as the code is stable. Beta testers are welcome, just drop me a line via flickr mail if you want to give it a try (your privacy settings must be set to allow the display of EXIF data).

dartar has added a photo to the pool:

This screenshot shows the distribution of photos (y) vs. members (x) in a sample of public Flickr groups. You can click on the note attached to the red dot to visualize the real graph. This is to announce a new feature added to the latest version (0.4) of Group Trackr.

Different graphs are now available displaying comparative statistics for currently tracked groups. Please note that only groups with at least one day of tracked activity are displayed in these graphs.

Hopefully these graphs can help discover some meaningful patterns in the Flickr universe.

This feature provides statistics similar to those collected by gustavog (who must be credited for this intriguing idea) in January 2005 (although Group Trackr data refer to a smaller sample, updated on a daily basis).

Hopefully these graphs can help discover some meaningful patterns in the Flickr universe.

This feature provides statistics similar to those collected by gustavog (who must be credited for this intriguing idea) in January 2005 (although Group Trackr data refer to a smaller sample, updated on a daily basis).

displaying EXIF statistics and searching by EXIF data

dartar has added a photo to the pool:

Update
The latest on EXIF Explorer.

I've recently started toying with the Flickr API (partly for work, partly for fun), and I'm amazed at the unlimited possibilities it offers. Unfortunately, with the only exception of camera type, most EXIF data cannot be directly searched/extracted through the API, which I think is a major limitation for developers interested in building applications on top of flickr.

Knowing the preferred aperture, focal length, exposure or ISO speed in one's stream or being able to filter one's pictures by these criteria is a feature that I really miss in flickr. So I coded a simple PHP script that aggregates statistics from the latest pictures uploaded by a user.

The script uses the great phpFlickr class and the JpGraph library. Since it's quite demanding in terms of processing (it has to extract and parse EXIF data for every single picture), it's currently limited to a max. of 50 pictures.

I hope to make this tool public as soon as I manage to remove all the crap from my code and make it stable and secure. If anyone wants to give it a try or help with coding/debugging, just drop me a word by flickr mail.

Thanks to Christian for his valuable feedback and coding ideas on parsing EXIF data.
