Technique Pool

Updated, 2007-09-01.

Welcome! This group is an effort to disseminate useful, generalizable knowledge about photography, and we'd like your help. The photos in our pool are only gateways to the topics we discuss. Before you post a topic or photo, please read the rules, which tells how to post and what we'd like to see. In particular, be on-topic (photographic technique, not computer software minutiae or one-time "how I did this" explanations) and don't duplicate topics (check the index, use the discussion search function).

Here are a couple of related groups, which you may find more useful for topics outside our purview:

There are dozens of Photoshop groups that discuss image manipulation. It would be best if Photoshop-specific issues were posted there. Post-processing topics are definitely welcome here, but please try to make it generic, and stress the concepts, not the specific actions.

Equipment -- For all your specific equipment discussion that isn't technique-related. (e.g. Which camera should I buy?)

From Ore To Gold -- Show how you turned photographical ore into gold using the techniques learned here.

Graphic Pens

t.benedict has added a photo to the pool:

Of all of the writing instruments on the planet, these are my favorite. During most of high school, a 2x0 and 3x0 pen were my main writing tools.

Unfortunately I found out that there are some drawbacks to these when taken on an airplane: they tend to empty their ink resevoir onto the user. And the inks these use are... difficult to remove.

I was overjoyed to find that K&E, Koh-I-Noor, Staedtler, and practically anyone else who ever made these still do. Long live the graphic pen!

This was done using a mix of techniques. A total of 54 images were used, taken in two sets of 27 using a CHDK script. Each set was taken at a range of focus values spanning from the very near to the very far. The sharpest part of each shot in the set was combined into a single image using CombineZP, giving this effectively infinite depth of field. The two sets were taken at different exposure settings and the images produced by CombineZP were subsequently processed in Fotomatix as a two-shot HDR stack to help fill in some of the darker shadow areas in the pens.

To the best of my knowledge, this technique of Z-stacking was pioneered by Paul Haeberli while he was at Silicon Graphics. You can read his original article at Grafica Obscura.

Jeff Engelhardt has added a photo to the pool:

The outtake portrait from this week's assignment. Yet another technique that Doug introduced me to was the Ryan Brenizer "Bokeh Panorama" technique. This involves shooting a subject with a narrow lens and a very open aperture (here I think it was 50mm f/2), fixing the focus and the exposure, and taking multiple shots to stitch together (12 here - three across and four down). The effect is an artificially narrow depth of field - one not able to be achieved with a real lens.

I chose the other portrait to submit for the assignment, because there was a lot more character in the expression, but this one came out decent so I thought I'd post it, too. Check out the detail here.

So, no artificial blurring in post - I just did the standard touchups of exposure, cropping, curves, etd. The DOF is all straight out of camera, but just different shots stitched. In retrospect, I should have been closer to him because the DOF here is too deep (the foreground should be more out of focus). Will try again soon . .

The Dragan Family

Jeff Howard has added a photo to the pool:

Tried a number of firsts with this shot. Started out with the subject off camera and took five exposures to create an HDR of the background. Then brought them in for a sixth shot. Once I had my HDR I brought it into photoshop and did some touch-ups. Added the subjects as another layer and did a few touch-ups on them to help balance the two shots. Subtracted the background of the top layer (which blended in to the bottom layer since all the shots were locked off). Then flattened the image and ran it through the draganizer action. A few small final touch-ups after that and this is what came out.

For a bit of an explanation about the location you can check out the next shot in my stream.
Fallen Ivy, a mid-air viewpoint

This is off the side of the start of the bridge path to Rosslyn Castle. The odd brown rooty mass on the right used to be ivy climbing up the wall. Either it fell off, or was torn off to clean the wall or discourage climbers, since it reached up to the iron hoop on the left, which reaches up to the top of the bridge path wall.

The light was poor, and the only interesting thing about this photograph is that I was photographed taking it. I've added that image in comment below because you can't show images in Flickr descriptions.

This image is part of a set where I tested image stacking as a way of reducing noise in a digital image. This technique has been used in astrophotography for years. I wanted to see if it could be applied to general photography as well. The results indicate that it can!

All this probably makes more sense if you see the set as a whole: Digital Image Noise Reduction (DINR)

In this side-by-side 1:1 crop, the stacked image is on the right. The last image from the sequence is on the left.

This is a full 4000x3000 image. View original size to see detail. In particular, look at the noise structure in the white areas of the cup, and on the white index card. Also pay attention to the noise structure in the wood.

There is a dark chthonic world, a mirror image of the one we like in, bathed in red and orange light as if lit by a dying sun or the fires of the nether world. Digital photographers can't go there- but then it's not the kind of place you would want to go for a holiday anyway.
Loading the film backwards in the camera gives an effect known as redscale. The pictures tend to be underexposed- next time I try this I will use wider apertures/longer exposures.

A Lesson in Focal Length

crazytallblond (中国) has added a photo to the pool:

The shot on the left was taken at wide angle (18mm). The shot on the right was taken at telephoto (55mm--although this just indicates zoomed in status; telephoto could mean 200mm too).
Wide angle will enlarge the proportions of the object closest to the lens, often making unflattering portraits unless you know what you are doing and are looking to distort the photo and dramatitize the image.
You'll notice the two speakers in the wall are visible only on the left. This is because it shrinks the background by increasing the distance relative to the foreground. This can make a person stand out with a landscape included by making the person big and the landscape small.
Telephoto flattens the photo, decreasing the relative distance relationship between the foreground and background. The background will appear larger at these focal lengths.

Remeber, zooming in and out changes proportions. Be mindful of whether you or the camera lens should move.

This was in Ocean City, NJ btw. A beach house we rented.

18th century "skyscrapers" on the Mound

Chris_Malcolm has added a photo to the pool:

The original medieval city of Edinburgh was severely limited in building space to the neighbourhood of the Royal Mile from the Castle to the Palace. Unable to expand horizontally the city grew upwards. There are still I believe some extant examples of twelve storey buildings, but not as easy to count or photograph as this example of a nine storey tenement on the Mound.

Because of the height of these buildings and the steepness of the slope with which the Mound falls away from them it's difficult to photograph these without the converging verticals of an up-tilted camera view, unless you have a view camera or a DSLR with a tilt-shift lens which can compensate optically for such perspective distortions.

Or unless you use the "poor man's tilt shift" of a horizontal wide angle view and cropping off the bottom. Keeping the camera level keeps the verticals parallel and the top of the building is brought into view by the width of the wide angle lens. Or unless you apply one of the rather good modern perspective transformation tools now available. That's how this image was produced.

The original RAW image from which this was derived by perspective transformation can be seen here. Employing such large global image transformation is reputed to lose detail and soften images. PTLens was used to do this perspective transformation. In fact so litte detail was lost that there is more detail in this image than in the original from-camera JPG of the highest quality.

I am totally addicted to creating these glass composite shots. It seems like there are endless possibilities and the geometric patterns created in the middle are just amazing.

Well this didn't really turn out the way I would have liked but it was fun trying. Actually there are about 7photos here. I wanted to capture that ever repeating image effect with photos rather than video. Photo, open, photo, open, repeat.
Resurrection

Proudfoottt has added a photo to the pool:

A twenty year old flash, a shutter release and a lot of time makes an excellent picture.
A small hot shoe flash was fired manually from my hand by pressing the discharge button. The white balance was set for the background so the flash appears very blue. I had to wear sunglasses because the flash kept blinding me and had a hard time walking. The blue burst of light is created by firing the flash right at the camera. No software was used in this picture. It is all one exposure.
