These beautiful infill apartments were designed to complement the existing surrounding architecture. From Klimek's Wrocław: Architecture and History:

"The availability of many centrally-located plots punctuating the city's historic tissue [sites of buildings destroyed during WWII] presented Wrocław with a special opportunity, contributing to its unique character among Polish cities. Modernist residential developments, consisting of uniform apartment blocks constructed of prefabricated elements, were luckily built mostly on the outskirts of the historic city, and small empty lots were left alone. Only in the late 1980s did they begin to draw investors, attracted by their central location and the economic aspect of having all the necessary infrastructure already in place. New link buildings, fondly referred to as "fillings" (as they fill in the gaps between existing buildings), became a local specialty and something of a mass movement. Usually their architecture refers to the form of adjacent 19th century townhouses, but sometimes fantasy, for so long suppressed by the "concrete slab" mentality, reigns supreme (19)."

Urban Ecology Center at Valley Passage

The bicycle and pedestrian path to the right connects the street grid of this neighborhood ("Silver City") to the Hank Aaron State Trail and the Menomonee River Valley through a portal under a rail track www.flickr.com/photos/johndecember/6820066516/ and a bridge www.flickr.com/photos/johndecember/6821901930.

A pathway at this site had been used by workers walking from homes in Silver City to jobs in the Menomonee Valley, but then it was blocked off. This passage was reopened in November 2010.

The building at the left is in the under-construction branch of the www.urbanecologycenter.org
