The photo walk assignment for April is "A Walk Around a Park". I've been very pushed for time this month with colds etc so haven't had much chance to take up the assignment. At last I got some time today and bonus the weather was wonderful.... no coat!

Farmers have lost many hundreds, possibly thousands, of livestock in the terrible drifting snow that just isn't showing signs of melting for at least another week.

The Road to the Beach!

Took this yesterday as you can see we have had rather a lot of snow dumped on us. It was driven in on 50mph winds! This is the road not far from my house that goes down to the beach, its at least a foot deep. In lots of places on the island the snow has drifted and is 10 or more feet deep! We are still officially snowed-in but access is slowly happening.
Processed this to B&W in Serif for Sliders Sunday.

A little further along the Main Road in Kirk Michael are some fields and these guys are the residents at the moment. They are Loaghtan sheep which is classed as a rare breed originating here in the Isle of Man. They are characterised by having a brown fleece and four horns. The rams in particular have a fine set of four horns the ewes may have 2,3 or 4 and they are much smaller than those of the rams. This breed is a fairly common sight on the island now but back in the 1960's it almost died out, thankfully with careful breeding and selection the numbers are very good now.
Sorry to be posing late life has become a little busier here lately and quite stormy too! There is also snow forecast for tonight and tomorrow. Looks like March is living up to the old rhyme "in like a lion out like a lamb, in like a lamb out like a lion" This time its definitely in like a lamb and out like a lion! And I'm supposed to be getting the boat on Saturday!!!!!!

The Old Vicarage

This house isn't far from the garage it is set in fairly large grounds. It is called the Old Vicarage as it was the home of the Vicar of the Parish until the 1960's when he move to be nearer his church. The land for the building was donated to the church in 1743 by Dr Thomas Wilson , son of Bishop Wilson ( (20 December 1663 – 7 March 1755) who was a very influential man in Manx history.
Today it is a private residence the owner of which has a collection of old motor bikes which he opens to the public during race weeks.

Mae ffigurau cyfrifiadau’n eithaf diystyr wrth sôn am ieithoedd bach am na ddangosant safon iaith y rhai sy’n honni eu bod yn siaradwyr, ond yn ôl cyfrifiad 2001, 1,689 allan o 76,315, neu 2.2% o’r boblogaeth, a ddywedai eu bod yn medru rhywfaint o’r iaith.

Cyfansoddwyd y geiriadur hwn gan yr ysgolhaig Manawaidd John Kelly (1750-1809). Bu’n gwneud gwaith ar ddiwygio’r Beibl Manaweg am chwe blynedd, ond ei waith mwyaf oedd “A Triglot Dictionary of the Celtic Language, as spoken in Man, Scotland, and Ireland, together with the English”. Gwaetha’r modd, dinistriwyd y rhannau o’r geiriadur hwnnw a argraffwyd, a rhan o’r llawysgrif, mewn tân cyn ei gwblhau. The Manx language is a kind of Gaelic spoken on the Isle of Man. The language declined under English rule and the last speaker to be brought up in the traditional Manx-speaking society died in 1974.

The language has enthusiastic revivers, however, and there is now a Manx primary school Bunscoill Ghaelgagh at Balley Keeil Eoin (St. John’s) In September 2007 there were 55 children learning entirely through the language. In 2001, 1,689 of the 76,315 people on the Island (2.2% f the population) said they spoke Manx, but it isn’t clear to what extent they were fluent in it.

This dictionary by John Kelly was nearly lost as the original work was partially destroyed in a fire. It was eventually published in this form in 1866 by the Manx Society.
