Kansas Drought 2012

A beavers skull sits on a parched dry lake bed in Central Kansas. The drought in Kansas really took its toll on wildlife & agriculture in 2012. Recent rains and a snowy winter have helped immensely, however Kansas is still not in the clear. This Summer will have the final word on whether or not this drought has come to an end.

The only building that still stands from the original photo is the Columbian building in the center. The buildings on the sides have been torn down.

Columbian (Knox) Building, 112-114 W. 6th (1889). Romanesque-Prairie style; designed by Seymour Davis for Wm. Knox's bank, which failed in 1890s. Offices of prominent businessmen, attorneys, political organizations (e.g., Anti-Saloon League), and other institutions (e.g., U.S. Weather Bureau). On 1901 saloon-smashing visit to town, Carrie Nation snuck in to meet an attorney but had to flee out back door to escape an angry mob. On National Register of Historic Places. Anti-war rally at the Kansas State Capitol Building, Topeka, Kansas (May 13, 1970)

The black and white photograph shows a crowd of people at the anti-war rally on the steps of the capitol in Topeka, Kansas. The peaceful demonstration attended by about 1,200 college students, was held to protest the United States involvement in Cambodia and to ask Kansas Governor Robert Docking to call a special session of the legislature to consider an anti-war proposal. The proposed legislation would make it unlawful for Kansas citizens to fight outside the United States without a declaration of war by Congress. Governor Docking met with students and accepted their petitions for the special session, but no further action was taken toward the request.

Dandelion seeds are of such ingenuity. The perfect sphere with the seeds in the center, the method of travel by variety of creatures + wind. No wonder they are so successful!
