Thanks, guys... I'm also fortunate enough to be in a position to replace my gear if needed, though plan to hire a 200-400mm zoom for the safari, and would prefer not to pay to replace THAT if lost. Will need to see what kind of options the rental companies have for lost or damaged gear...

As for insurance, it depends. Personally I don't insure my gear. I don't take out any insurance I don't absolutely need. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to replace any gear I lose, have stolen or break. I'd rather not have to, but if I need to I can pay out.

It's a risk. I'm betting on my ability to look after my gear. If I don't lose or break it or have it stolen then I'm going to come out ahead of someone who pays insurance and also has no problems. However, if we both lose our stuff then the person with insurance will win as they'll likely not have paid as much as the gear in worth in insurance premiums.

However, it's not a fair game. It's the job of the insurance company to make sure that they - on average - come out on top. That's how they make their money. Most people would be better off if they didn't insure their stuff. If that wasn't the case then insurance companies would all go bust! :0)

I'm willing to take the risk because I don't have huge amounts of gear and could afford to spend the couple of grand to replace it if I lost it. If I couldn't afford that then I'd be a little less willing to take the risk, but I'd still advise thinking long and hard about what else you could do with the money and if the risk is worth it. I've been to Kenya, South Africa, India and Zambia and never had any issues with my gear, so for time being I'm winning!

Problem solved.

P.S. Kenyan and especially Tanzanian roads are not much more than one big pot hole and bone shatteringly bumpy at times. Just be careful what you do with your bag whilst your travelling overland, a bit of padding in a camera bag won't save your gear on some roads.

Hi guys,

I'm new to this African Safari forum. Good stuff. I am going on a safari to Kenya next month, with the usual valuable photo gear. Someone advised me against taking out a separate 'rider' on my home owners insurance just to cover my photo gear. The travelers insurance policy that I have also doesn't cover photo gear.

I was just curious to know what others have done to protect the value of their gear when travelling to Africa (or anywhere, for that matter).
