Yes. It is scheduled to be refurbished over the next several months. It will be receiving a much needed paint job, and the original "Golf Ball" radar dome will be placed back on top to restore it to its original historic state. While the radar equipment in the tower is no longer in use after the new ATCT was opened, the classic tower is still used for various radio transmission equipment.

There are discussions of possible uses for the tower that would occupy its office space, but nothing serious in the works. Nothing will happen in that regard any time soon, if at all, as the tower is THE prime real estate at Dulles, and any decision would take a very long time to come to a conclusion.

Where is the best? I will stop on my way to North Carolina in April (2013). Where are the best locations that aren't through windows? My telephoto is a 70-200 (f/2.8) and a tele-converter. Will those get good pics? I don't want to crop a lot.

I hope they keep doing it even after this year. A bunch of hard-core spotters from the local Washington Baltimore Spotters Club were among the winners and were very happy and impressed with the experience. I just hope I get an opportunity to get close up like that some day. For now I'll settle with the chances I get as a Docent at the National Air and Space Museum on Become a Pilot Days.

You're right John; MWAA, as an organization, is new to social media, and is therefore cautious, so those of us who organize these events help spread the word through our personal channels via word-of-mouth moreso than MWAA official. But don't get me wrong; even if MWAA tweeted this hourly during the drawing, we'd all still advertise this on our own - it's just COOL! And we have so much fun seeing how much our guests enjoy this stuff!
