For those of us who still may enjoy film, but have fallen in love with megapixles.

As long as it's a Canon, size doesn't matter.

First, I did find out where the AF assist beam is. By googling it, I got hold of a chart that shows most parts of the camera.

dms.sjmc.umn.edu/Equipment_Guides/DIgital_Camera_Guides/P...

Second, the same problem goes on, so the problem is somewhere else.

my next concern is if it is worth the money to get it recalibrated...

Hi, as far as I know point-and-shoot cameras like the S5 IS use a combination of sensor based, electronic shutter and the lens diaphragm, mechanical shutter. dSLRs on the other hand, employ focal plane shutters that operate independently from the lens' diaphragm.

The S5 IS, like any other P&S camera auto-focuses by using the main sensor's contrast detection system.

The camera and lens communicate with one another via a continuous feedback loop, with the DiGiC II processor evaluating the focus and sending electronic commands to the lens to focus while the latter gives a feedback to the camera as how much "focus travel" it has performed. The whole process takes a second or two until the camera thinks it has achieved the correct focus.

My guess is that your lens may need re-calibration due to its age and wear-and-tear. Send it back to Canon for a thorough inspection.

hope this helps. :o)

Hi,

I have been using my Powershot S5 for some 4 years. No problem until now.

When I want to take a macro photo, I have real difficulties to get the focus. Either the yellow square shows up or, althought I get the green screen, the focus isn't on.

It might be related to the low light but for the same lighting I have never had this problem before.

What makes me even more amazed is the fact that I can get the right focus by using the MF function...

Can someone shed some light over that issue? ;)

Someone told me it might be related to something called "shutter rail"...

The size of the sensor makes also a big difference in terms of depth of field. The smaller is the sensor, the bigger is the D.O.F.
