That's so Portland...

This is a group for photos that capture something specific to Portland, Oregon.

Rather than just being a collection of pictures taken in Portland, Oregon, I want this group to specialize in photos of events, subcultures, landmarks, etc. that stick out as unique to Portland, Oregon - the kind of photos that might make you say, "That's so Portland..."

My best friend from Indiana visited me a few months ago. I asked her to describe Portland (specifically Last Thursday on Albera) in 5 words. It came out to:
grunge
hippie
circus
yard-sale
extravaganza

Glad You are back!! I Loved what I found in this group, and kept looking to see if there was anything happening.... Finally quit it. (thought it to be dead....Glad I was mistaken!) You made my day to see the invites for some of my photos! And to see that some I had previously submitted were added. This is a great group, and You have done very well with it. (and, hey, don't sweat the lapse in ability to moderate it.... those things happen... and you have addressed it. What is meant to be will be.)

Moderating a group is tough...and fun at the same time. Hope ya find that right person(s) to help ya out! Thanks, again! ~=:-)

Back again! Sorry I missed you! Also sorry if I didn't get your photos in. I posted some criteria for getting pictures in above. Sometimes of course it's just really subjective or I've already included a bunch of photos of the same subject.

I'm ba-ack - requesting back-up moderator and some tips on getting your photos in

jenhowell77 posted a new topic:

Really sorry, everybody. I moved to South Korea, my flickr account lapsed and hence I have been very very negligent in my moderation duties. That has changed, starting tonight.

I am, however, wondering if there's anyone who'd be interested in being added as a moderator. Mind you, I want to make sure we have a similar aesthetic, so I'd probably check out your favorites and/or photostream before settling on somebody. But really I just want to make sure the community doesn't die due to me not being able to keep up my account.

Second part of my notes. Here are some tips for getting into the community:

1. Your picture needs to be of Portland. Not of Mt. Hood or the Columbia Gorge. Of Portland. I'll sometimes strech "Portland" into Beaverton, Gresham and the other outlying suburbs as well as Sauvie Island, but beyond that, well, it's not so Portland anymore. If I could get there on a bike without being a superstar it probably qualifies, otherwise, not so much.

2. Your picture should not just be of the antics you and your friends were up to unless you're really good at taking pictures of you and your friends. But don't send me all your party pictures. Maybe 1 or 2.

3. Please don't send me those 4 shots in one frame things. It's a personal preference, perhaps, but they make me go cross-eyed.

4. I don't like stuff to be really photoshopped - also a personal preference. An authentic amateur shot of something interesting will trump a photoshopped beautiful view any day of the week.

5. I'm sent so many great pictures of bikes, but to avoid making this the "biking in Portland" community, I can only put in a small fraction. Keep sending them to me by all means, but keep working to make them interesting.

6. If you write a story about your photo it ups your chances of getting it in. Some photos have gotten in on story alone, cause this community can then serve as a place to document our history.

7. On a related note, send pictures of news and events in Portland, but please identify what is happening and maybe write a little explanation if possible. Some events you may think everyone knows about, but they all don't, and now that I'm in Korea I'm unfortunately more out of the loop.

Thanks a lot. Sorry if I lost some of you. I promise to be a good moderator from here on out.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Howell
