Reply to Nutcracker Doll

kappy6 posted a reply:

I just made 3 of the dolls for my niece - first time making the dolls, and first time making a project from the book. I didn't have the right yarn, but I did have some heavyweight chocolate brown chenille yarn. I just placed it on top, and used a wide stitch of embroidery thread in chocolate brown to make the part. Then, I just braided the strands. I didn't put hair to cover the back of the head (so it looks like a blank face on the back), but i don't think it detracts from the doll, and was fairly simple to do.

It took me a bit to figure out the skirt. For future dolls, I might try and use elastic thread for the waist of the skirt, so that the skirt is removable (that way I can make extra skirts as clothing). I also think it would be neat to somehow do ballet shoes for the feet - maybe they could be drawn on?

My machine does very limited embroidery stitches, and I don't know how to embroider, so it was tricky figuring out what to do for the face. I did some weird stitch that sort of did the eyes, but they are not perfect circles (but it gives the dolls cute expressions). I used a basic stitch for the nose. For the mouth, I used the pattern to cut out a piece of pink felt (for some dolls I used pale pink, others hot pink) in the shape of the mouth on the pattern. Amazingly, the faces came out cute.

The most difficult part on the directions (or at least, the most unclear to me), was the sewing of the arms and legs onto the body. I couldn't get the upper arm to have the rounded flat edge, and the same for the legs. So, my legs have sort of a square bottom, and they are squared and a bit flattened when attached to the body. However, I think that makes it easier to put the doll in a sitting position.

Overall the dolls are adorable, but the project is a bit daunting for the beginner, or for those who have trouble taking their spin on how to get something finished.

I had my nieces help me - from picking out the fabric and ribbon combos, to actually helping with the stuffing. So, to have a project that they could actually help with, and with how cute they looked, and how much they loved them - well worth any confusion or aggravation.

Fiskars makes a pair of Scallop Fabric Shears. I got mine at Michael's Craft Store. If you don't have one in your area, your local fabric store should have them or at the very least know what direction to point you in.

You may be able to get away with using Scallop Shears made for cutting paper. They are probably more widely available (scrapbooking stores would have them). Just know that they won't cut fabric as good as the Fiskars would.

Hope that helps.

michelou! posted a reply:

So I made the doll and just in case anyone has the same questions I did.. (since nobody else answered!)

For me, the most difficult part of the doll wasn't the hair, it was getting her arms on! I must need more practice with my whip stitch, because nothing I did by hand would get them to be secure enough. I ended up using my sewing machine and carefully stitching them on that way. They ended up a little lower down than I would have wanted, but in the end she looked fine.

The hair was relatively easy, once you got started. The question I had above about the back was solved after I did the front and top of the hair, I just continued following the part I made all the way down the back of the head (just visualize your own hair parted down the center for pigtails).

The doll was well received by my 2 year old niece! Now I just need to get some pictures of her with it (camera is on the fritz).

For some context, I would consider myself an intermediate sewer (I typically make bags, purses, and other accessories. A few articles of clothing as well. This was the 2nd stuffed toy I have ever made)

I'm about to start the Nutcracker Doll from Stitched In Time. Does anyone have any tips or hints for me that they learned while going through the process?

I've read through the instructions and the only part that seems confusing to me is the hair. Does anyone have a picture of the back of their Nutcracker Doll so I can see how you did the hair at the back?

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

I'm really interested in doing the photo pillows from the book, but I don't have a color printer. Does anyone know if this sort of thing can be done by digital print services or Kinkos or something? Or do I just have to find a friend with the right kind of printer.

Hi guys!
Sorry for the confusion, but I *think* all of the photos from both of you are showing up in the pool (at least, I can see them from my end?) -- it just takes a little while for them to show up, since I've switched the group settings to have the photos held temporarily until I approve them. I was getting so many photos submitted that had nothing to do with Stitched in Time, that I'm just finding it easier to handle managing the pool this way.

However, if there are more photos that you know you've submitted but aren't showing up (I try to check it every day), definitely let me know and I will look into it pronto!

Thank you!
