New Deal Post Office Murals

Murals and reliefs installed in post offices (or US courthouses) under the New Deal Art Project. No pictures of post offices, (please submit those to the US Post Offices group at www.flickr.com/groups/postoffices ) or modern day murals on sides of buildings. This group is NOT for WPA art UNLESS it is in a post office.

The images of New Deal post office art are courtesy of the USPS. Any commercial use of an image requires permission from the USPS--not just the photo submitter.

Coincidentally a man visiting the PO at the same time started a conversation about his father, a Michigan muralist, It must have been this writer - www.wpamurals.com/bernstei.htm

Both he and the Grants Pass Wikipedia listing cite Grants Pass PO as being unique in having two murals. Not sure how this idea would have started but numerous POs have multiple murals and some by different artists.

Just up the I5 freeway in Eugene there are two murals in their lobby. Same artist, Carl Morris, painted both though - www.lanecc.edu/library/don/morris.htm

Two murals in main lobby. Different artist for each but very compatible styles and format, long wide, full width of room.

The lobby and murals are in very good condition and may have been restored.

There is a fantastic show running through May 17, 2009 at the state museum in Harrisburg (right next to the capitol). It's called 'A Common Canvas', and it surveys all of Pennsylvania's post office art. They even have several actual pieces of art on loan. It's really well done. We spent several hours checking it out. If you go, try out the touch screens, several of my photos were used for that.

I've read "through" it. Wasn't that impressed. Some of the history behind the murals is interesting, but all the "other" was of no interest to me.

p0mural posted a new topic:

Who has read Wall to Wall America and what do you think about it?

Wall-to-Wall America - Post Office Murals in the Great Depression
Karal Ann Marling

www.upress.umn.edu/Books/m/marling_wall.html

Hoping for more of a guidebook approach I found the book frustrating for its lack of location information but none the less kept on reading the interesting narratives.

The academic approach and truisms are a bit threadbare though. Who really thinks that Lenin should be in every mural painted from 1930 on?

The similarity in tone and content to 'Democratic Vistas. Post Offices and Public Art in the New Deal' by Marlene Park & Geraldis Markowitz is a bit surprising as well.

Thanks to everyone for sharing your great photos.

I would like to correspond with members of this group about reusing some photos on the new, Yahoo-map driven web site www.newdealartregistry.org. I have written to some of you individually, but I'm afraid I might not have completely mastered the Flickr email system. If you might be interested in having your work on this new site, please respond here or email info@newdealartregistry.org. And please look at the site and let us know what you think.

This group is mainly for murals, or relief-type artworks that were installed in post offices during the New Deal Art Project (1934-1943). However, WPA murals from other buildings (libraries, city halls, schools, etc) are welcome. As are PWAP,TRAP murals. NO modern day murals painted on sides of buildings are wanted and will be removed. Also, I would welcome a copy of any PO murals you submit, as well as pictures of the PO it is in for my personal collection. Please check out another PO mural website at www.wpamurals.com
