I will have to get my husband to let you know more than what is here. He got the (huge) base of his collection started by inheriting his grandfather's.

He has places and stamps of special interest - he used to do a lot of USPS offerings but then started focussing on places and things of interest, like Portugal as he is 1/2 Portugese.

I like Ireland (I wonder why?!) and horses.

He used to correspond regularly with foreign post offices for new offerings (got me some Diana, Princess of Wales honoring stamps from England after her death that way).

He also had regular mailings he got from stamp collections sellers, not so much anymore. HE started this group as he had planned to get back into it, then got buy elsewhere. Today, we would probebaly join some mailings from the Internet.

Also we bought a LOT of good stamps from the local hobby stores or from catalogs in samll lots by type of stamp (flowers, countries, horses, whatever interests you).

Try GOOGLE-ing or sources!

And - TRY e-Bay!!! I got a really cool mint page of Padre Pio stamps from Ireland in the envelope they were mailed in to the US seller to! - cheeeep!

Some of my favorite horse stamps have come from lot buying.

Also specialty local coin/stamp stores, but they tend to be expensive.

We also save unique stamps from mail we get, some charities send 2/3/4 cent stamps on their enverlopes and especially (why? dunno!)their retuen envelopes and we save the WHOLE THING - envelope collecting is fun too, and respected! (We send the charity offering in a new envelope with a boring stick-um stamp!)

Don't fall for hinged to store stamps. Not "done" these days!

Unfortunately, Ed's grandfather's collection came in a HUGE set of two books for stamps of the world by country, showing places (illustrated) for all issued stamps (to be set in with hinges, OY!), going all the way back to the Penny Black (England's first postage stamp) (no we do not have one!)

The book are great for finding stamps by date without straining the eyeballs for the issuing PO's date on the stamp, but not a great place to store them, especially when one has more than one!

Stamp Cataloging/pricing Books work as well, if they are very detailed! (Scott's - expensive, try the library! New ly issued each year; prices relative to demand, of course!)

For his base collection to be worth much we have to remove them all from the books, ouch! SO when we remove them we try to leve the hinges on, as removing hinges is tricky and sometimes not worth it, as the stamp glue can be damaged.

usually, i would wait in line at the US Post Office and ask for the newest designs in stamps. but lately i've been looking at snail mail swap websites such as www.postcrossing.com and www.swapbot.com
how did you get into stamp collecting?

hello. this is a sort of introduction thread. i'll be the first to break the ice and answer.

my mom always collected stamps and i thought it was very boring. however, over 20 years later, i own some of her first stamp albums. looking through them was amazing. it was like looking at minature works of art.

i recently bought two Lidner stockbook albums. i'm not too picky about my albums or what type of stamp i collect.

it's good to know that people out there still collect stamps. :)
