We also thank our contestants who entered more than 500 photos to spotlight the beauty of redwood ecosystems—and the importance of protecting these natural treasures now and in the future.

Save the Redwoods League has selected 10 finalists in our Know Wonder© Photo Contest. Now it's time for the public to vote for the winners of first, second and third prizes.

Choose your favorite! Visitors to the www.savetheredwoods.org/contest_vote page can vote only once. Each voter will be entered in a weekly drawing for the chance to win a League gift pack, including a jute bag, hat, stainless steel water bottle, and more.

Winners will be announced on August 25, 2011, on SaveTheRedwoods.org/contest. Public voting is from July 21, 2011, to August 12, 2011.

Save the Redwoods League invites you to enter your Redwoods photos into our Walk Among Giants Online Photo Contest. If you are a US resident, we encourage you to enter up to ten color photos of redwood and giant sequoia forests into this free online contest.

By entering, you will help spotlight the importance of protecting majestic redwood forests now and in the future, and you’ll get a chance to win great prizes.

For more information and details, just read the contest rules, then upload your photos onto our Walk Among Giants Group Pool and tag each submission with “10WalkAmongGiants.” Winners will be contacted via email or their Flickr IDs. Entries are due August 19, 2010.

Hi All! I wanted to let everyone in the group new about a new blog we've started: It's called The Mighty Sparrow and you can find it at www.themightysparrow.com. We'll talk about pretty much everything related to the outdoors in California, focusing mostly on hiking, boating and camping. Of course, photos are going to be a huge part of the site. That said, there should be a lot of posts on East Bay and the surrounding areas. Come visit, enjoy and make sure to leave some comments! Let us know if we should be covering something more, something less or just something different. As this is a new blog, feedback is, of course, appreciated.

Unnacceptable terms and a blatant photo rights grab. Perhaps you were not aware of the boilerplate legal terms you are using, perhaps you are. If you're a photographer and you approved these terms, shame on you.

Here is the relevant section, from:

Scroll down to "License" and click on it.

By entering the Contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable perpetual, nonexclusive license to Authorized Parties, to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with the Contest and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to display on savetheredwoods.org and in Save the Redwoods League publications. Entrants consent to the Sponsor doing or omitting to do any act that would otherwise infringe the entrant's "moral rights" in their entries. Display or publication of any entry on an Authorized Party's website does not indicate the entrant will be selected as a winner. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use. Additionally, by entering, each entrant grants to Authorized Parties the unrestricted right to use all statements made in connection with the Contest, and pictures or likenesses of Contest entrants, or choose not to do so, at their sole discretion. Authorized Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use.

For those not used to reading Photo Contest terms this spells out:

A) Every photo entered gives Save The Redwoods League a permanent nonexclusive license to use your photograph without paying you. That's forever, folks, not for the duration of the photo contest.

B) You grant them permission to use a photograph of YOU, the photographer, for any reason they want.

Hopefully the folks at Save the Redwoods League simply overlooked this rights grab and will rectify it.
