My suggestion is - wherever you find yourself, just go for a walk with your camera anywhere. You'll find plenty of people, scenes and things to photograph.

We will be travelling between the base locations and stopping along the way to visit many of the sights. We also hope to visit areas local to where we are staying, and Galle & Nuwara Eliya and definate places of note that we intend to visit.

I use a Panasonic G10 with a 14-42mm kit lens, sigma 19mm f2.8 fixed and (by the time I go) a Panasonic Lumix G 45-200mm zoom lens.

I am hoping to come back with a portfolio of the trip which will cover both the tourist trail and the not so obvious off the beaten track stuff. Taking in a mixture of landscapes, street scenes, landmarks and wildlife that the island has to offer.

As such I'm hoping for some ideas on where to head in search of such pictures whilst still following our primary route.

Hi just back from Sri Lanka, here some advice.
Kandy has some interesting spot in the center of the city, worth a visit but for me nothing so special in terms of photo subject (personal opinion)
I can't understand why you miss Nuwara Eliya.
The train between Nuwara Eliya and Ella is one of the most nice part of the trip.
The driver sent us at the station and he pick up in Ella.
In south coast we stop in Tangalle beach and was a great place for shot if you have a zoom and like birdwatching. The lagoon was beautiful.
Remember, all the south coast is more suitable for surf than swim, if you expect coral reef and white send go in north east.
Don't do the mistake miss Galle, it is the most nice city and you should try to sleep there at least one night. The colonial atmosphere is magic (btw best place for shopping)
It is difficult suggest you a place for photo (this is a photo group not a travel forum so we need discuss about it) depends what you like to do, wich camera you use and so on.
I use only black & white film in medium format and 35 mm,
Only one 50 mm lens no zoom or tele so can be different than you with a digital camera and wide lens.
We need different subject and different place, I did my best shot early morning when the light was clear (I hate take picture under the sunshine) and the child go to the school or workers start daily job.
No need tell you where to go, the right shot is just behind you if you can see it.
According my opinion no one of the touristic spot can offer you a subject for interesting photo, in that place I used my Iphone and was more than enough.

Hi All,

I am planning a 2 week visit to Sri Lanka in late April and would love some ideas of places to visit off the primary tourist trail to get some pics of the real Sri Lanka.

We are hiring a guide for the two weeks, and will be following the itinerary below:

- Arrive Colombo April 14th (Sinalese New Year I believe) stay
overnight before heading to Kandy the following day.
- Overnight in Kandy then on to Ella for 2 nights.
- On to Yalla for 2 nights
- Heading back along the south coast stopping at Marissa,
Unawatuna and Bentota before headig back to Colombo for one
more night and then heading home.

I would like to see a mixture of the obvious sights (since they are popular for a reason) and also to get some the real life experiences from such a culturally diverse country.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know the name of this waterfall but it is by the road from Nuwara to Kandy, and close the the section 2 of rhamboda falls by the roadside. Hopefully, a forum member could identify it.
