Hello everyone! I'm new to pincushions....have cut out material for two, one is for me and one is for my neighbor. I didn't want to have a pincushion that was so light it would fly away from me when I try to stab a needle into it. Many of you had some great suggestions. I was thinking of using some flax/linseed that we have for using in breads....will that work to give the cushion some weight? I am thinking of sewing a pouch for it to stuff inside the cushion...what do you think? :-) Update...I did use the flaxseed (linfrö) and put that into a pouch which I then inserted into the final product then stuffed cotton around it to fill it out. The pin cushion came out very nice and my neighbor loves it! :-)

Oh, my! I've been using crushed walnut shells, but it never occurred to em that one of my pincushions could cause an allergic reaction. Thanks for the tip, Gale W!

Kemarah, Emery sand might come through regular woven cottons as it is very fine - if you use it, line your pincushion with a nonwoven interfacing and a layer of batting or fiberfill to keep the pins secure.

bird sand is the gravel you put in the bottom of small birds cages, or in their food. It usually comes in a box.

Actually walnut shells can be very toxic to people who are allergic to walnuts and it seems walnut allergy (along with other nut allergy) is on the rise. Especially with little ones and even a touch can cause a bad reaction. I think I will try the plastic pellets on the bottom and fiberfill on top. btw my daughter is one of those allergic to walnuts. So anything made by someone who has a walnut filled pin cushion (because the walnut oil/protein could be transferred by the pins) would be something that could cause a reaction for her unless it was washed well before she touched it.

I have tried lentils, rice, poly beads, seed pod fibers, sand, poly filling, left-over batting and crushed walnut shells from the pet store. Have not tried emery sand which I understand is very good, but supposedly all new needles/pins fo not need to be sharpened.
In my experience, crushed walnut shells are by far the best, you can't beat the weighty feel of the finished cushion. I make a pouch lining and fill the lining-that way if the cushion ever breaks open, you don't have small walnut pieces everywhere. Only problem is if you are sending it as a gift and the recipient is allergic....
