I just went through 40lbs of sugar during the recent fall migration through central Texas. It kept me busy. If you concentrate more than 4:1 than it will attract more insects (Though you are likely to have some bees and ants anyway).
I just want to add please clean the feeders at least every 3 days in hot weather every 5 in cool weather. We wouldn't want to send off sick birds especially when they are about to migrate.
Please don't use any greasy sticky stuff to repel insects from the feeders. If it gets on their wings it's deadly to the hummers. They can't get that stuff off their feathers.

I do 3 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar when they first arrive and just before they leave in the fall. Once they have settled in for the summer I do 4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar. I boil the water first and then add the sugar and stir until it dissolves. :)

I just wanted to say hi to all the members. I just joined the group and I have a huge passion for photographing hummingbirds. It started last year when I spent my first summer in my new house. I have several photos added to my flickr site (hummingbird album) and will post the best of the new ones I take this year. The hummingbirds have just started to arrive where I live so I look forward to taking new photos and sharing them with the group!
