With regard to strobes, I used to have Ikelites, but found that they are HEAVY, especially if you're thinking of travelling with them, and with only four settings then you may find it limiting, however, the quality of light they produce is not as 'harsh/ intense' as the Inon's.
I now use a pair of Inon Z240's with my Ikelite housing, with all settings on manual, no TTL available, but this suits me, as I prefer to make the decisions on lighting, not leave it to a computer chip.

Backscatter Underwater Video & Photo posted a reply:

Strobes:
The Ikelite DS-161/160 strobes are a good strobe to use with the Ikelite housing. You can get great TTL with it. If you ever go to a different housing, the DS-161/160 are limiting. They can really only be used in manual and they only have 4 power settings. If you go with the smaller and cheaper Sea&Sea or Inon strobes, you get more manual settings, but no TTL options.
2 strobes is always better. you do not want to light the water between you and you subject. That produces backscatter. You only want the strobe to glance the subject. Having 2 will reduce hard shadows and help to minimize backscatter.
www.backscatter.com/learn/article/article.php?ID=15
Lenses:
With underwater photography you want to get as close to your subject as possible. The effective range of any strobe is a max of 6 ft. So that is why we recommend super wide lenses or macro lenses. The closer you get, the more colors you will get and the clearer the water will appear. When shooting wide, you need to shoot behind a dome. To keep it brief, the dome will create a virtual image that is closer to the lens than the actual subject and it will distort the image so that the corners can be within the minimum focus distance of the lens. In general, you will need a diopter for any rectilinear zoom lens. I would recommend the Tokina 10-17 Fisheye. I know what you are thinking, but when you zoom to the 17 ens it crops out the corner distortion and you can get super close to the subject. Also Fisheye lenses do not need a diopter.

Let me know what you think.

hi there, i am looking to get an underwater setup for my nikon d300s, i have found the ikelite housing to be what I am looking for, but for housings, I am thinking the ikelite 160 or 161, not sure if I should get 1 or 2 strobes, I will be doing ocean and pool photography. any suggestions on that? also for pool photography of babies and models what do you guys use, i have a wide angle(11-16mm tonika) and a 50mm. so not sure what would work best for it. any advice would be great.

You can synch substrobes with the ikelite D10 housing. You can also synch substrobes with the canon housing by using a fiberoptic cable. Try www.underwaterphotographyguide.com for info.
