Bay Nature

This group is run by Bay Nature Institute for folks who love nature in the San Francisco Bay Area -- whether you take photos or just want to look at them and talk about them.

Originally separate from Bay Nature, the group was started by Ken-ichi Ueda, who captured the subject matter of Bay Nature perfectly: Nature in the San Francisco Bay Area! The Bay Area is both teeming with amazing creatures and the habitats they live in, and under constant threat of development, invasive species, pollution, etc. Not only that, but the Bay Area is filled with people who use and appreciate nature in diverse and fascinating ways. So post your photos, share your experiences, start some discussions!

Bay Nature Institute publishes a quarterly full-color magazine and an extensive website with lots of resources to learn more about the habitats and species of our region. In addition to just sharing images and fostering discussion, we hope to use this group as a sounding board and point of contact for finding photos to publish in our print magazine. We'll also be putting a Flickr badge on baynature.org.

Wanted to mention to G Dan Mitchell & others ... try to get a copy of Harold Gilliam's San Francisco Bay (1957). He writes eloquently and clearly about the tides "upstream." You will come away with a real sense of the Bay as a living & "breathing" life form with far-reaching effects. -Georgia (aka BobcatWeather)

OK, Native wildflowers have significant environmental benefits, even ones that do not have showy flowers. The milkweed is a perfect example. Plant milkweed though and you might get lots of butterflies, not bad eh.
So, in California, you should be looking for California natives. You'll attract a wide variety of insects that will in turn attract a wide variety of birds. It goes on from there. If you want to learn about native plants and plant insect interactions, I'd suggest that you find ;your nearest CNPS chapter. Check out CNPS.org.
Some of the insects are really beautiful too. check out the Male Valley Carpenter bee. www.flickr.com/photos/sailinsteve/5850197235/

"... photos should be taken in the SF Bay area."

That sort of goes to the heart of the question, since it is hard to define the boundaries of the "bay area." Heck, I'm not sure what they are! ;-)

To cite one example, I was photographing at the Cosumnes River Wildlife Reserve this winter when I saw an interpretive sign pointing out that water there is only about five feet above sea level and affected by tides! I had never thought about such an area being directly affected by the SF Bay.

I'm not sure I would want a truly definitive to the question, and I'm certain that there are going to be gray areas. (I just had to deal with this in a group I admin - a group that focuses on the landscape of the Sierra Nevada. We've had questions about - you guessed it - where the boundaries are.)

I think it is good to offer a general philosophy about what the focus is, along with some examples of what might clearly be appropriate and inappropriate, and then to acknowledge (as I had to do in the Sierra group) that sometimes the admin is just going to have to make a judgment call.

Take care,

JR, photos should be taken in the SF Bay area. I don't do as much admin work as I used to, but I try to remove pics taken way out of range when I notice them. I'd say Japan is definitely out of range, but I'm sure there are some awesome Japanese nature groups if you look for them.

Hello, I am new to this group - and Flickr in general - and have a question about the scope of this group, especially what is the regional range of images acceptable to post. The group name implies that it focuses on the SF Bay but I've seen pictures posted taken well outside of that as well.

Now, I have some cool pictures taken in Japan earlier this month and I am wondering if that might be stretching it a bit if I posted them in this group... :)

I am looking forward to contributing here and hopefully to meet some of you in the field someday. Best, JR

Hi Lisa
California has a lot of unique plants/wildflower because of the dry summers and relatively short winters. Collectively plants that thrive in these conditions are called Mediterranean plants and hence a lot of plants that originally came from the Mediterranean or climates similar such as parts of Australia, South African and Chile also thrive here. Broom is a classic example. All of its associated species create beautiful blooms but at the same time wreak havoc in the "natural" environment here because they are so successful that they displace natives. California landscape is subtle. I suggest you go to a local arboretum to see them growing in their plant communities.
