One thing to remember is that the more you carry a camera, the more you will look at the world, and see it in a different way. I imagine that a trained musician in the bird-infested rainforest would get the same kind of kick.

Congratulations Victoria, for starting off a thread which obviously engages people - It's produced lots of advice for you, but also enabled people to really think about what they do and share ideas with each other.

Like you I'm very new at this (less than a year) and so far I've found:
my 50mm prime is priceless and helps me get up close, so I use it most of the time;
My eye is much better than my expertise with the camera.
I can't shoot from the hip - too hard!
About half the time I ask people very casually if they mind if I take their picture - and usually add 'Just pretend I'm not here!'.
I wander about looking as invisible as possible and try to put myself into a frame of mind which is quiet, attentive and 'floaty'.
I too take hundreds of pictures and like about 10% when I get them onto the computer.
Fun, isn't it? Hope you're still enjoying it.

Yeah, although I think he was coming at it from where the viewfinder is placed on a rangefinder, compared to the usual central placing on a SLR, rather than arguing against use of the viewfinder, per se.
