Poor-Man's Macro (PLEASE, read the description carefully!)

This group is for those who take macro pictures using anything but a macro lens: any variation of reverse lens technique, extention tubes/rings, magnifying glass, microscopes, you name it! This page contains some info under the section "Equipment".
For example, one can hold a reverse lens on to another lens or to a camera body (in fact, there are special adaptors called "reverse mount" just for that!) and take extreme macro pictures, depending on the focal length of the lenses.

PLEASE, no photos from point-and-shoot fixed lens cameras with macro mode, these can be considered macro lenses. However, if you used, say, a reversed lens or a magnifier with a point-and-shoot, then you should post here!

IMPORTANT
Since I intend this group to be a sort of encouragement for people without proper macro lenses to try macro photography, it is important that you describe your technique either in the description or in the comments under your shot.

A note about the name:
Some people are confused by the name of the group. I apologize for the confusion. "Poor-Man's Macro" doens't mean that one has to be poor to participate. It is an expression used to describe techniques for achieving true macro without a macro lens. Most expensive cameras and cheapest ones are equally useless for macro shots without macro lenses.

A note for the better sex members: please, don't consider the name of the group to be sexist, I just thought it would be awkward to call it "poor-man's/woman's macro", or something to that effect ;-)

If I got right specifications, it has a sensor of 6.08 x 4.56 mm, this info will help to calculate the magnification ratio you get.

As suggested above shoot at a ruler, then meausure how many mm of the sensor (call this as A) 1mm of the ruler covered (call this as B) (consider that the larger side of the shot covered 6.08mm).
The magnification ratio is A/B.

shoot a photo of a mm ruler and if you know the sensor size you can do some math to get the ratio magnification.

18 inches it's a nice working distance especially if you will get to a 1:1 magnification ratio. What model of Panasonic do you have?

Hi,
Just been dissecting an old Canon 135mm FD lens and thought i'd try the front lens element on my Panasonic compact digital.... I have a lens mount/adaptor bracket that has a 37mm screw thread on so I found a 37-49mm step ring and superglued the lens to it! amazed at how sharp it is and gives a working distance of around 18 inches, not sure what magnification it is but will do some tests tomorrow.

if you get both filters and put them together then rotate one(cpl on lens would be good) until they go solid black,, hold in that position then mark the edges of both with a dot of tipex, say at 12 oclock position then when you put on camera,, you can instantly and quite accuratly set at 90 or 0 degrees just by looking where tipex marks are in relation to each other on lens and flash

@Pixel-Pusher
So am I right in concluding that with a circular polariser filter attached to the end of a macro lens say, + a linear polariser filter in front of any unpolarised light source (say a flash-gun) then that will produce the effects of cross polarisation?

Weekly Macro Theme Group

sammyg23 posted a new topic:

Hello,

I am a regular user of this group and I find Macro photography fascinating.

I had an idea of creating a group where a theme is set each week and Macro photo's are submitted by users to the pool based on the theme.

Each week a winner is chosen and their photo will be featured for a week.

Simple. It is also another great way of discovering and recognising other peoples work and getting your own work noticed.

Join this group: www.flickr.com/groups/2204054@N23/

I hope this is of interest to some of you. Please go ahead and join and as soon as there are 10 members I will set a theme.

Many thanks guys!
