Dear knitters and crocheters,
I need your help. Last year something terrible happened to me. My (ex) neighbour (male) broke one of my fingers to stop me from yarnbombing. Instead of helping me the police and the mayor ignored me so the violence and destruction continued. I have moved away from this house to a safer place. It took me a year of healing (with hospital help).

For a new beginning of this year I have started to decorate the tree in front of our cityhall. January 2th, this piece was gone and also the little adds I had placed in which I asked people to join in for a colourful and peaceful 2013.

I am asking you to help me telling to our mayor that knitting and crocheting are a peaceful acts. I ask you to send a picture of one of the pieces you have made to him. So he can see that worldwide people engage in this non-violence happy activity. It would be a great loss if Voorschoten is becoming the only place in the world without happiness……because of fear for violence!

Thank you, Ilona de Graaff
T-rex Scarf

Do you like dinosaurs, specifically anatomically inaccurate T-rex's? Then this event is for you! Riot Prrl will be unveiling a scarf for our favorite prehistoric hero at the Springfield Mass. Science Museum on November 25th. If before this date you decide you want to help out and knit a piece for the scarf, please feel free. All we ask is that make it 1ft wide and that you use either pink, green, blue, yellow or orange. It came be as long as you want. Please refrain from the use of pastels, we want this T-rex to look fierce. The cut off for submitting pieces is November 17th. Come on by, it should be fabulous and bring friends. The more the merrier. We also will also be taking donations for scarfs, hats, mittens and all around warm items for those in need within the greater Springfield area. Also even if you cant make it but would love to help out, it would be greatly appreciated. Either send me a message on flickr or e-mail me for a mailing address for those that are coming from afar. Cheers friends. :)

Report from last night,

With our recent work, this is what we love....

1. Secure work onto pole, etc. with zip ties at top, bottom, middle and any major color changes.

2. If there is time (and no cops), sew up the work (top to bottom) with yarn that is partially made of HEMP (omg, strong and perfect for tight-fitting pieces).

3. Remove zip ties as you go or if possible, use zip ties to secure the work's height (through a hole in the pole, around a corner if on a fence, etc.)

This allows you to vary the quality of the sew-up depending on time and location.

microfibermilitiaChicago posted a reply:

We've used a basic whip stitch for a couple reasons.
1. Quickest stitch we can do and/or teach others
2. Makes it more permanent.

The second one is big with us because even though our work is considered "cute" and like "graffiti in Candyland" and normally accepted by people.... it's STILL GRAFFITI.

If we have ANY right to call it knitted or crocheted graffiti or use the term "yarn BOMBING" then we've got to take a similar risk as spray, stencil and sticker folks do. We make our work at home, not really risking being caught by the police. We might as well sit there and sew it. AND it makes someone have to use an actual KNIFE to cut it down. That's a lot of effort to get rid of one of our pieces. And we like that we make others put in that effort.

But of course recently we've been experimenting with zip ties. Think best would be a combo of the two. Also, stitching gives you more to work with if the piece's width is irregular and you need to tighten it up.
