Sunday Parkways -- Portland, Oregon

It's not just 2008 anymore! Now that there have been THREE TIMES as many Sunday Parkways as Portland has had before, we are changing the name of this unofficial group to encompass all years. So, go ahead, post your 2009, 2010 2011 and beyond Sunday Parkways Photos!

Check out peoples' stories at www.portlandonline.com/transportation/index.cfm?c=46103&a...

Also, a bunch of great media links in the sidebar at the same URL.

What is Sunday Parkways?

6 miles, 6 hours, zero traffic~!

o A circular route of city streets open to walk, bike, run, jump & skip - without having to watch out for cars!
o A 6 mile "temporary park", connecting North Portland neighborhoods and residents.
o A relaxed, non-competitive, FREE event featuring a variety of activities in 4 parks and along the route.

The Portland Event

Sunday Parkways came to Portland on Sunday, June 22, 2008.

Six miles of local streets in North Portland were closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Intersections were staffed by volunteers allowing residents to get to and from their driveways, but all were encouraged to limit their motor vehicle use during the event.

The circular route gave Portlanders a chance to get out and be active right in their own neighborhood. Participants walked, biked, ran, strolled, and roller bladed along the route to activities in the parks as well as to nearby shops and businesses in the vicinity.

Scrunchleface posted a new topic:

Hey everyone,

Those fine folks over at PBOT putting the whole shebang (meaning Sunday Parkways 2010) together have created an Official Sunday Parkways group. The rules for that group are slightly different--in that by posting you are allowing use of your photos by Portland Sunday Parkways, not necessarily with attribution or compensation.
As I know many of us (including me) use various forms of Creative Commons licenses on our photos, they may not be able to use photos that are posted here.

So, if you would like to share your photos and would be happy that they be put to use helping promote Sunday Parkways, please join the group and add some photos!
