Told my daughter last night that I found this group and was happy to see others that take pics of TX markers. I guess I am not the only one that likes them. When my oldest was in junior high we took her and a friend around the state taking photos of the markers for a history project they were working on. They kept their eyes glued for the signs announcing them, "Historical Marker one mile on the right." LOL they'd sing out, "Historical marker, historical marker!" Hubby and I started calling them "hysterical makers" after that. That was 23 years ago. To this day hubby and I enjoy capturing their pics and leaning a little more history.

How did you become a marker enthusiast?

Texas Historical Commission atlas, with a marker directory.

The maps stink but between them and Google maps, I've been able to at least get close on marker locations (the Groce's Ferry one was out of range of my camera's GPS so I fudged it using the shape of the river bend that shows up on both maps).

haha me too! I've taken pictures of courthouse historical markers and then read them only when I've gotten home. Now they're online for all to read.

I think it's simply great that you can find a group for almost anything here on Flickr.

van.sutherland posted a reply:

Thanks for the info, glenaa. I updated those two settings, then uploaded a new image which supposedly contained the coordinates in the EXIF data, but Flickr didn't recognize them. I'll play around a little and see if my image editing software is doing something strange with the EXIF data.

Okay, got it. My final step (resizing the image) was corrupting the EXIF data. I've started updating my marker photos and they are now showing the EXIF data and can be mapped. I'll eventually get around to replacing all my photos with geotag info. Thanks again, glenaa!

On the Privacy and Permissions tab of "Your account" settings, there at 2 settings that need to be set up:

Who will be able to see your stuff on a map

and

Import EXIF location data

If those 2 values are set, your photos will be mappable.

I geotag almost all of my photos. I like to know where I have been. I usually take a GPS unit with me, and keep my camera clock updated to GPS time. When I get home, I use Geosetter to add the geolocation information directly to the photo's EXIF data. That way the location info is always part of the photo, whether it is uploaded to Flickr or not.
