Critics Corner

Welcome to Critics Corner! This group is for people who want honest critiques (good or bad) of their photos, those who want to share their photography knowledge with those who want to receive it, and those who are not afraid to hear an honest opinion or suggestion.

***If you are easily offended and cannot take honest criticism of your photos very well or do not feel comfortable being honest in giving a critique, this is not the group for you.***

Everyone has different levels of experience in photography. You do not have to be a professional to critique. Use your own knowledge and experience (however great or small it may be) as well as your personal opinions/suggestions to critique the photos.

Critiques do not have to be negative. If you see a photo you love, let the photographer know what it is about their photo you love. If you do give a negative critique, please explain why. This group is about learning from others and a negative critique without any explanation does not help anyone. There is no rating system; you simply give your opinions/suggestions.

You may introduce yourself to the group in the MEET N GREET discussion thread.

I'm not a pro but on many photos I've view on motion photography to critic this one, this photo must have a little bit more "motion blur" on the surroundings of the subject. I hope I helped. :D I'm new in Flickr.

Reply to Honest Critique Needed

M-JAmodeo posted a reply:

It is an original (unusual) photo, that's probably why it has received many views.
This shot could be interesting but I think there are a couple of faults. As mentioned by the previous posts, you could have avoided cropping out the right hand capsule. But more important I think you tried to center the subject too much. I am assuming by the exaggerated proportion between height and width that you cropped the lower half of the picture. In this case I think the rule of thirds can be applied (ex. leaving the capsules in the upper third and the powder in the lower two thirds). If there were more foreground (showing the powder coming towards the viewer) this would have made a stronger image. Remember that a good image takes the viewers eyes from one point and conducts them to another - this gives motion and interest to a picture. Leaving a foreground of powder that leads the eye up to the capsules that contained the powder might create a stronger effect. The fact that one of the capsules has been cut off could be acceptable in that case.
You could also work on the lighting a bit to create more shadows that could strengthen the overall image.
Also, just for experiments sake, try using a polarizing filter, it will make the colors of the capsules stand out more.

M-JAmodeo posted a reply:

I have recently read a post form a member that was passionately upset because no one has left a comment on the photographs that he has posted on this site. So, I went to his photostream to see his pictures. I found some of his works very nice and some I consider to be a bit boring. I think this is the problem: people are afraid to say something negative about someone else's work. But is this not the reason we are part of this group? Being part of a critique group does not only mean waiting for someone to say how great our photo is but to hear honest criticism; and also to make comments (good or bad) about someone else's. I believe that many people come in this group because they hope to learn from other peoples comments; but let's remember that this is a two way street. You do not have to be an expert to say if you like or don't like someone's work. Those of us who have joined this group have done so because we want to hear the honest opinions of others, professionals AND amateurs. No one here should feel unqualified to leave a comment. So, Come On People! Take those couple of minutes more to comment on the works of others and you will probably begin to see other peoples comments on yours.

Your sense of composition and balance is really good although the rule of thirds should not be adhered to religiously. One of the difficulties I see in this shot is one that I come across very often in my own black and white film photography. The grey level of the child's sweater is almost the same as the wood plank and so at one point it becomes difficult to distinguish were the arm ends and the plank begins. Was this shot on black and white film or in color and converted digitally? The main source of light appears to come from the right in such a way that the child's arm is in the shadow. If you have no artificial way of changing the light you can have the child try changing positions - higher or lower - until there is enough light on the child's arm to increase the contrast. Maybe a hand held flash aimed in such a way that it bounces off the wood but avoids the child's arm might work.
This is not an easy shot but you did a good job with it.

Hello,
I think the subject, composition, and technical quality of the shot is very nice. The only suggestion that comes to my mind is that if you use a wider aperture on a short lens thereby reducing the depth of focus so that the farthest part of the boardwalk becomes out of focus it might help concentrate the attention on the child and less on the background. Although the classic portrait photograph is taken with a long lens to avoid "swelling" the subject (this is more true on closeups however), a shorter focus length would permit a shorter depth of field and help make the subject stand out a bit more.

Hello, If I may I would like to give a few suggestions. The subjects are great and it's true that the eyes are a key feature of the shot. I believe one correction could be made in the fact that the forearm of the man and the paw of the cat are partially cut. If this picture was larger and had been cropped to this size you might be able to correct that. Otherwise, you could crop the picture close in on their faces highlighting their expressions and removing much of the forearm and paw from the image. The lighting is very interesting and I think the contrast of the mans face slightly darker and the cats face lighter is very nice. I would "zoom in" on the faces to emphasize their expressions.
