I use my Sony A65, the lenses I use vary from the kit 18-55mm Sony lens to my Tamron 70-300mm and several others of varying lengths between these.

Clearly the lens I use is entirely dependent upon the situation for example my Olympic photos are all with the Tamron because I was in the crowd.

I have also found this guide on the official FIE photos website which might be of use to some people looking for some guidelines to work from. www.fencingphotos.com/shooting.htm

I borrowed a friends Nikkor 2.8 70-200mm, which I used for the near piste, but then added a 1.4 extender for the far piste. set the camera on shutter priority and kept it at 1/1000, sadly I had to crank up the iso to 3200 and later to 5000. Impressed with the sensitivity of my D700 though...However the D3s would have been amazing. I've added a few pics and will add a few more if people want.

Newbie to Group

dcteam62 posted a new topic:

Greetings All,

So I've been photographing my son's fencing career for a while now....I wish I found this group wayyy back at the beginning... anyhow I just posted a few shots from the recent NAC in Reno.

After reading the various posts, I'm glad to see I wasn't the only person having trouble photographing fencing matches. Seems to me shooting little league baseball is much easier.

But what I learned most of all is that the best photos generally come from those with really high end C/N cameras and lenses.

But given my budget limitations I've been very happy with my pentax K7. At Reno, I shot my K7 on TAV mode, w/55mm 1.4 lens. TAV mode allows the user to set the shutter speed and aperture, the camera sets the ISO.

There was still quite a bit of pp with LR3, especially in getting the WB and colors right.. Anyhows any comments on my photos would be greatly appreciated.

Why create a group for each subject you can think of? You might as well just tag them with a keyword, or start a thread for pictures in the group, or open a galery. I can't imagine there will be a thriving group discussing photos of sparking sabres.

Kashmera bought herself a Nikon D3 and is now in Ottawa, ON, and migh have quit fencing after she shot the World Cup in Montreal and the poster for that was one of her fotos.
She has not been active posting to flickr until 2011 Jun 26.
If you think the gyms are dark, wait till you shoot inside some of the CDN Forces' armouries. They use this weird, mercury or whatever lighting. For fotog purpose, it might as well not have been lit.

Recently I used a TV camera's podium to shoot - after the TV camera operator left, of course - so had to shoot with a 70-200 f2.8 lens. Since then, I've used that as my primary action lens esp for sabre comp.
That lens is the latest generation full-frame Nikon lens though I am using a D300 only.
The lens is one thing, getting close, but not too close is another solution.
It helps to be a ref, so the reffing ref will allow you to get in IN FRONT OF him/her. Then you wish you have a stool with wheels.
This is what Kashmera [she's not a ref, but I introduced her to the refs, I think she has given up on fencing...] & I do.

I shot fencing only once. I used Canon's 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 and I was pretty happy with the results on my crop sensor camera. Smaller f values help blur the background and freeze the action (while keeping ISO and noise low).

One more tip for people using my camera: Shoot JPEGs, because the buffer is not large, and this way you can get more shots in a series. Also, if you shoot JPEGs set the white balance in camera, because it's harder to correct it in postprocessing.
