Antique Cat Photos

Cats of all descriptions: cats by themselves, with people, dominating dogs, eating, sleeping, eating, sleeping. No digital photos, please. Prefer photos from the 1980's or earlier. The classic snapshop era---1920-1960---is always a favorite. We seek earlier images avidly: cabinet cards, tintypes, cdvs. (I've got some of all of those). If someone has a daguerreotype, that would be great.
Of course, those images that show cats and dogs in loving harmony are always welcome.

A. Davey---
I went and looked at the photo of the dead cat with eight legs. While I can't say it is to my taste, others may find it interesting. Cats die. If someone took a photo of their beloved dead cat, should I be the one to say no one gets to see it? I can imagine such a photo, and I probably would want to look at it. If someone posted a photo of a cat being abused, mistreated, injured, or killed---then I would delete it. Other than that, I'm not going to set myself up as arbitrator of cat correctness. I like some of the photos on here better than others, and I can live with that.
Best, mrwaterslide

I was enjoying this group until I came across an antique photo of a dead eight-legged cat. Other animal groups on flickr draw the line at posting photos of dead animals. I would like to see this group do the same.

You're a great finder, lauralemur. You could do what you propose (I heartily endorse the idea) or, if you'd like, I'll make you a coadministrator.
thayrat2001---I think you are free to ask individual posters their policies on the use of their photos. I choose to keep mine apart from such use.
I may choose in the future to license some of them to stock photo sites and get a bit of return---I have a huge investment in these photos, and if I could monetize them to an extent (well, some of them), I wouldn't mind.

Let me point out that Antique Cat Photos is 59 members strong and counting - that's pretty darn good! Count me among the happy and very content members. To use a tired cliche (you'll have to pardon by lack of creativity) these beautiful old photos really speak for themselves...not too much in the way of discussion topics needed to appreciate them, or the need for them. If it is more photos you seek, how do you feel about fellow ACP members simply suggesting that an appropriate image, when found, be posted to our group (by writing so in the comment section of the suitable photo)?

I I don't see any inadequacy min you as moderator. it is very difficult to find antique cat photos and you created a safe haven for the ones, like me that love these photos. I only would like the photos to be allowed for altered artists to use them in their art as collage and altered books.
Many hugs

mrwaterslide posted a new topic:

I feel like a bad administrator. I don't ever do anything to encourage anybody to come over here and post photos, and I don't have lots of brilliant discussion topics, or ideas about what cats, or cat photos, are good for.
My sister got upset when she heard my mother calling my cat "Dummy," and she requested that I stop using that name (I got this information secondhand from my mother, who is a bit addled, so it may be off by a millimeter, or a mile). Dummy wasn't really his name (to refer to him as "he" or "him" is kind of an honorific title, kind of the way you refer to somebody as a Kentucky Colonel); it was just what I called him.
Actually, I usually call him Stupe, and then on second sally I call him Dummy. His original name was Isabella, but then we changed it to Ike.
(It's a long story).
Anyway, if someone out there wanted to be a co-administrator, I would be happy to share my power, such as it is. Or, if you're all happy with my benign neglect, we'll continue down that path.
Your Humble Servant, mrwaterslide

Companion web site to Pets in America (the book) and an exhibit mounted at the University of South Carolina. Many old photos of dogs, cats, birds and their various paraphrenalia.

I finished reading the book recently, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in the history of pet keeping. The extent of the pet trade is way more extensive than I realized - fish, birds, dogs, etc. shipped to America by the thousands starting around 1800.
