Insect Identification Help Group

Whether you need help identifying insects and invertebrates, or can help identify them, we welcome you to this group.

Post photos or videos of INSECTS and other INVERTEBRATES THAT YOU CAN'T IDENTIFY so we can help to identify them.

Post ONLY insects and invertebrates you cannot identify. This is not an all-purpose insect photography group.

IMPORTANT: Please include the LOCATION and DATE the photo was taken, as this is vital to identification. Location data can be in the title, caption, tags or geotags, but photos without any location will be declined. We don't have time to search your photostream for clues.

REMEMBER Flickr is a global community. There are literally millions of species of invertebrate worldwide. The more information you can give, the more likely you are to get a firm identification. We need all the help we can get!

I will only accept one photo of each specimen. Add further views in the comments if necessary - this is so that we can display as many DIFFERENT creatures as possible on the front page. This makes it more interesting for identifiers, and more likely that photos will be seen and identified.

We need members who can help with identification too - just click on any picture to add your comment if you have an idea of what it might be.

It is some species of Ichneumon Wasp (Ichneumonidae) Note the ovipositor and long slender petiole. While I can't provide a species, you might browse the Bug Guide In case the wasp ranges into the Southern US. bugguide.net/node/view/150/bgimage

There's one more, less common reason for denial: the insect in the photo has already been identified. Again, read the rules -- the pool is for images of bugs that have not been identified at the time the photo was submitted.

speech path girl posted a new topic:

So you submitted an image, and I didn't add it to the pool. I've gotten tired of giving explanatory comments, so read on. There are really only two reasons why I will deny an image:

1. It doesn't show the whole bug. While a close-up facial shot or a view of the underside may actually be useful to separate one species from another, it's impossible to determine genus or even family without first seeing the entire insect. It's kind of like trying to identify a person from a picture of their nose.

2. You've submitted multiple shots of the same insect. Read the rules -- only one shot of each bug! Submit the best, clearest image you've got and link any additional images in the comments.

I will continue to approve the image and leave you a reminder comment if you've forgotten to give a location, but be warned -- that's getting old too.

Not at all familiar with NZ entomology. Larvae = caterpillar. The next staged is Pupae. This could be a Pupa of any number of bugs. These often glue leaf and twig bits onto the shell. While it might be a moth, it could just as well be a beetle or any number of critters that pupate like butterflies and moths.
