Children of war, Children of peace

This is a group to help us get together and share our photos of children, not only our children, but all the children from all over the world.
I've borrowed this name from my favorite photographer, Robert Capa's famous book title. He was a great war photographer and finally lost his life in one of the battle fields.

World Refugee Day 2009 - 20th June

UNHCR posted a new topic:

"On this World Refugee Day, let us remember that refugees too are real people with real needs. Helping them to rebuild their lives and their communities benefits us all." – High Commissioner António Gutteres

"Real People, Real Needs" - refugees are individuals with real needs, just like you and me.

For the more than 34 million people of concern to UNHCR, a shortage or lack of the essentials of life - clean water, food, sanitation, shelter, health care and protection from violence and abuse - means that every day can be a struggle just to survive.

Real People, Real Needs.
This year, with the world economic crisis threatening to slash aid budgets and amid enormous global uncertainty, we need to ensure refugees are not forgotten. That's why the theme for this year's World Refugee Day on June 20 is "Real People, Real Needs."

Of the millions of people forcibly displaced by conflict, persecution and natural disasters, every one has a story to tell; they are real people, just like you and me, and they have real needs. But, despite the best efforts of UNHCR and many others, many of these basic needs are far from being met.

A comprehensive assessment of the needs of refugees and other people cared for by the UN refugee agency revealed that 30 percent were unmet - a third of them in basic and essential services. Improvements in nutrition and water supplies, access to primary health care, strengthened child protection programmes, better protection for women from sexual violence and abuse, and improvements in living conditions and sanitation facilities are just some of the needs that are not being met worldwide.

This World Refugee Day we ask you to remember the millions of forcibly displaced and stateless people under our care who are struggling with their day-to-day lives. One thing connects them all: basic needs that must be met so they have a chance to rebuild their lives.

The people of Northern Uganda have been oppressed by a merciless insurgency called the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). For the past TWO DECADES, they have been wrecking the lives on innocent people. Villages are burned, raided and people are left dying and helpless. Children are abducted into the army at night and forced to kill or be killed. Girls face the extra trauma of becoming sex slaves to commanders and "obedient" soldiers as well.
Sadly, these are only a few things that have plagued this country and these people for the past twenty-two years.

The 2008 Angkor Photography Festival Flickr Contest
PHOTOGRAPHY FOR CHANGE
Siem Reap, Cambodia. Nov. 23rd – Nov. 28th 2008

As part of the 2008 Angkor Photography Festival we are holding another Flickr contest. Winner's work will be chosen by a panel of judges with the three top images winning photography books. Photographs can be added to our Flickr group www.flickr.com/groups/angkorphotofestival starting July 15th.

This year the contest is open images from around the world, no longer just Asia, but should fit the festival's theme of 'Photography for Change'. A limit of 5 images per photographer can be accepted and we are looking for photographs that help demonstrate the festival's humanitarian goals. All work must be in documentary or journalistic style, and no digitally manipulated images will be accepted.

The contest is only open to non-professional photographers. Anyone making more than 50% of their income from photography is considered a professional.
Hello guys ! Would you like to contribute ???

canceled&gone posted a new topic:

Hello Folks all over the planet !

I am Ahmed Mokhtar, franco-egyptian humanist photographer and instructor based in France. (Here is a small sample of some photographs).

I intend to implement a non profit org., aiming at promoting Children Photo Workshops activities in India, where I regularly stay.

This will be a long-term project , aiming to build long-term mentorships between volunteers, photographers, educators, art-therapists and artists , investing all their mutual talents for under-privileged community children in India.

I believe that Photography and visual expressiveness, with its infinite varieties of uses ( colors, shapes, self-portraits, storytelling, small visual thematic projects etc..) becomes children’s internal AND universal language.

Photography as a medium for expresiveness, empowering kids, for self-discovery through creative process , image healing metaphors, visual stories, exhibits, unleashes children’s authentic language , helping them to find their own voices and to develop imagination, creativity and their inner voice to be HEARD and SEEN. Creativity , expression, love and patience are at the foundation of everything in children’slives.

This project will need a pdf brochure and a website, to ally free spirited talents helping to promote our activities. Therefore, I need some photographs, all related to children with cameras, children taking photos, kids in the street, nice stuff, etc..

I personnaly have some available, but I have seen some of yours and flickr's communities, and, truly, some are very expressive. If used on my pdf brochure or website in coming future, they will naturally bear "credit" and full acknowledgments. Remember, this is meant to be a totally non-profit/non-commercial thing.

Some very summarized sample of my own work in general you can see at:
vraitographe.blogspot.com

I have done several exhibits (mainly with Leica) and many campaigns, books and workshops.

May you wish to help with some of your children's photos, your networks, your contacts, photos, or with ideas, proposals, feedbacks, suggestions,....
I would be mostly grateful!!!!!

As you may well guess, things have to be built part by part in such a project, therefore, a concrete pdf will not be ready before few months
(not before ,July or August 2007).
Still, I truly wish to get your contributions with ideas, proposals, and photographs illustrating kids, kids taking photos, alone or in group etc.. You decide...!
It's the beginning of a long, but beautiful adventure, and we all know here that things are kindda harsh when you are non-profit and still constructing a project..

Here is all I can say to enlighten your idea about my project.
Truly hoping to get a reply , hopefully with some various ideas, proposals or options of photos,

Gratitude in advance !
Ahmed Mokhtar
Angkor Photography Festival--Street Children

Angkor Photography Festival posted a new topic:

The Angkor Photography Festival is proud to introduce photographs produced in the 2005 photography workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia, by 23 year old photographer, Paolo Picones, from the Philippines. At last year’s event a group of artists and reporters volunteered to organize the free workshop for young photographers from the region and we will be introducing the work on our Flickr page over the next few months:

www.flickr.com/photos/angkorphotographyfestival/sets

Paolo’s photographs of Cambodian street children are titled ‘Khmer Yagit’, 'yagit' being Paolo's native Tagalog for 'street children'. To anyone who has ever felt ‘beggar fatigue’, Paolo’s images are a powerful reminder of the humanity of those many chose to ignore. Many of the street children come from families with parents with AIDS or who have lost limbs to land mines, forcing these children to support entire families.

Some of the children photographed also attended the street children photo and dance workshops organized by the Angkor Photography Festival and their work can also be seen on our Flickr page.

The inaugural Angkor Photography Festival was held in October, 2005 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, and was the first of its kind organized in Southeast Asia. The goals of this international annual gathering are both artistic and humanitarian.

With this principle in mind, in addition to the fourteen major exhibitions and seven photo-projection evenings, a group of artists and reporters also volunteered to organize a free workshop for young photographers from the region as well as a photo-dance workshop for a group of underprivileged street children from the town of Siem Reap.

This page will be used to show the exhibitions from the festival, as well as work produced in the workshops and street children project, and will allow Flickr members to comment on the work.

Starting in May, we hope, we will also be showing work gathered from the contest on our Flickr group of the same name (Angkor Photography Festival) and winners' work will be shown at one of the slide projections in Siem Reap. If you would like updates of the festival and contest, please add the Angkor Photography Festival to your contacts.

The Angkor Photography Festival highlights not only the best of international photography but also hopes to reach out to the Flickr community, drawing in both the work of amateurs and photo-enthusiasts and thereby connecting the work of professional and amateur photographers.

We hope you will join us in our enthusiasm for photography at one of the world's great treasures, Angkor Wat, for the Angkor Photography Festival of 2006.

Any questions can be directed to Stuart Isett at: angkorphotofestival@yahoo.com

Thanks for your interest and please come join us at:
