You just can't beat the thrill of being pecked by an endangered species.

This group is for all those who have had similar experiences whilst visiting the magical island of Tiritiri Matangi (New Zealand).

Although Greg is indisputably the Takahe King, all photos, videos and stories relating to his extended family of 300 (ish), second cousins etc., are very welcome.

For some Takahe facts and ways to help protect this endangered species, visit the DOC website.

LONG LIVE GREG!

You might think that after fifty or sixty years of effort these birds would be flocking around like chickens, but this book shows that is not the case. The world of academic ornithology filled with idiot PhDs is the usual cause, but this failure is not for lack of trying.
"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share with you the news that Greg the takahe died this morning. The wonder, excitement, hilarity, shenanigans and advocacy he inspired was the stuff of legends. No takahe will ever be the same. Greg buddy, thanks for the memories xxx"

Tara Swan *Bunny Worshipper* posted a new topic:

Hi!

At university Im currently studying Biodiversity and conservation, and for my assignment, I have to come up with a plan on how I would save the Takahe. I adore pukeko, so I thought the Takahe would be fun, but theres not a lot of information about them around!

Does anyone have any information that could be handy? Things that not every average person would know about Takahe? Plus, if you want, say how if you were in charge, what would you do to save the Takahe? I would like to use a selection of ideas, and Im sure that there are many I havent even thought of yet!

I orignally thought that letting them look after their own young would be the best way to go, as we do not really know all their needs. But after meeting the Takahe at Mount Bruce, I learnt they dont make very good parents as they care more about themselves haha.

Thanks :)
