I've only just joined this group, but I'd highly recommend using the Layer Mask method. The great thing about using masks is that if it all goes wrong (and it sometimes does!), you can just delete them and start again without changing your image. Also, if you've overdone it a bit, you can change the brush colour to white and put bits back in. Another thing is that if you're using several textures, you can add a layer mask to each one and treat them differently. These are just a few reasons for using layer masks ... I'm sure there are many more!
