For me, especially recently, it is a way of working through some difficult, sad, emotional times. (Being an American, our health care system is crap and I cannot afford proper therapy. :-)) )

I too usually know exactly what light, pose, distance works for me. With a model, I would be starting from scratch. Although I do want to do that.

Or perhaps we all are just very, very narcissistic.

We re all differents then we might have many different reasons to do this.

Personally,i d say selfportraits are a way to know myself better.I could say to know my selves better cause i m sure we all have more than one identity in ourself.

Then I would say,as a photographer, that i m the model i know the best.And i would say,as a model,that i m the photographer i know the best.And i think that a good photography is like a meeting between a photographer and a model(it can be a situation of life,a landscape...)
Something must happen between these two characters for the photo can be good.
I know what the model is waiting for and i know what the photographer is waiting for.

Finally,i m the model the most available for myself.The model i am is always here when the photographer i am is here too and vice-versa...

why do you take self portraits?
I am making a reaserch about the selfportrait, and I wanted to see if there is patern who we all follow, a reason to do this
